"God, why couldn't that be me?"
By Kate Northrop
ARNOLD, Mo. — A Missouri woman was unknowingly jealous of herself when she caught word of a $228,000 Show Me Cash lottery jackpot win.
A lottery win is quite a lot to be jealous of, but one Missouri woman had nothing to envy when it turned out she was just coveting her own $228,000 jackpot.
She was in the town of Arnold when she saw a sign announcing a Show Me Cash jackpot winner, enough to strike a "twinge of jealousy," the Missouri Lottery said. The sign had advertised that a $228,000 Show Me Cash jackpot had been won at Circle K on Jeffco Boulevard.
"I was like, 'God, why couldn't that be me?'" she joked with Lottery officials. "So, I went into the gas station, got me a soda and went home. Then I was like, 'Let me check my numbers."
She pulled out her ticket from the Aug. 10 drawing and looked at her numbers — 4, 12, 23, 24, and 37 — and saw that all five had matched the winning numbers.
"I check my numbers and... yeah, I won," she finished.
She was filled with "an initial moment of disbelief," after which she buzzed around with the exciting news to "a handful of people."
"I tell everybody I don't play Powerball or Mega Millions," the anonymous winner continued. "I play Show Me Cash because it's only in Missouri, and everybody's like, 'Oh, you're never going to win,' and I say I have better odds of winning that than anything else, so I'm going to keep playing!"
She laughed because the feeling of validation was just that satisfying.
"So now, everybody's like, 'OK, maybe I should play,'" she said.
By the time the Missouri Lottery made their announcement about the win, she explained that she had already invested some of her winnings for retirement. The winner said she'll also plan to use some of the cash as a down payment on a house.
"I'm trying to be responsible with it," she reasoned.
