Millions of dollars in lottery prizes have gone unclaimed in Singapore by people who struck it rich but did not collect the prizes, it was reported on Thursday.

So forgetful or careless are these players that a whopping 23 million Singapore dollars (US$13.3 million) went unclaimed between April and March, according to the daily newspaper Streats.

A spokeswoman for Singapore Pools, which runs Toto, 4-D, Big Sweep and Score, said the amount was "less than 1 per cent of the total annual price payout".

In the 1998, 1999 and 2000 financial years, a total of 57 million Singapore dollars (US$33 million) in prize money went unclaimed. Winners could have misplaced, defaced or damaged their tickets, she said.

Some might not have made their claims within the 90 days from the date of the draw.
