Portion Of Winnings Will Help Hindu Temple Rebuild
The winners of last week's $85 million Powerball jackpot have yet to come forward, but the storeowners who sold the ticket received their share of the pot Tuesday.
Dipak and Rita Patel, the owners of Gary's Beverage Barn, are $30,000 richer, thanks to the person who bought the winning ticket on Super Bowl Sunday.
"I have no idea who bought the ticket," Dipak Patel said. "It was Super Bowl Sunday, and there was heavy traffic on that day."
The Patels said they know what they will do with a portion of their winnings. The Patels, originally from India, are members of a Hindu temple in Epping, N.H., that burned down New Year's Eve. It will take $500,000 to rebuild, but thanks to the Patels, the temple's building fund is $3,000 richer.
"We are right now in the process of getting an architect to do the required design," said Pandit Ramadheen Ramsamooj, of Saraswati Temple.
The Patels said business has picked up, with their lottery sales doubling since the Powerball ticket was purchased last week.
"Everybody says this is a lucky store," Dipak Patel said.
The family is already thinking about what else they want to do with their winnings.
"Maybe I'll go to Alaska for my vacation," Rita Dipak said.
