Virginia Lottery will announce multiple winners of the record $239 million jackpot
The winners of a $239 million Mega Millions jackpot have come forward more than a month after the winning ticket was sold, the Virginia Lottery said Wednesday.
Lottery spokesman Ed Scarborough said the winners' names and other details would not be revealed until a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond.
The $239 million jackpot is the world's second-largest single-ticket lottery win, after Jack Whittaker's $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas 2002.
It is also the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever. (Excluding jackpots of the previous version of the lottery game, called "The Big Game".)
A customer at the Red Apple Country Store off Interstate 81 in Stephens City bought the winning Mega Millions ticket. The numbers drawn Feb. 20 were 1-13-20-21-30 with Mega Ball 24.
The delay in claiming the prize prompted speculation that the ticket was lost or discarded, or that the winner was following the Virginia Lottery's suggestion to seek legal and financial advice before coming forward. The deadline for submitting the winning ticket is Aug. 18.
