California Lottery chief executive officer and director Anthony Molica has resigned after only seven months, a lottery representative confirmed.

Molica joined the California Lottery Sept. 2, 2003, after serving as executive director for the Washington Lottery. His last day is today.

"He has chosen to resign and join his family back in Washington state," said lottery representative Rosa Escutia.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will appoint Molica's replacement.

Molica's resignation will not impact the lottery's ability to appoint a new ad agency, Escutia said. In March, the lottery named Omnicom Group's BBDO West in San Francisco and Los Angeles the winner of its four-year, $100 million general-market ad account, pending approval from the lottery commission. The commission is scheduled to meet on April 13 to vote on whether to approve the decision.

BBDO edged out fellow Omnicom shop DDB in Venice, Calif.; Interpublic Group's Dailey & Associates in West Hollywood, Calif.; the incumbent, Grey Global Group's Grey in Los Angeles; and independent Ground Zero in Marina del Rey, Calif.

BBDO is the fourth shop to have been named the winner in a review process that has dragged on for nearly three years. Former lottery director Joan Wilson oversaw two previous failed reviews in which the lottery selected three agencies, then rescinded the awards.

DDB was named the winner in the first review, but following a protest from Grey over disclosure issues, the account was placed back in review. IPG's Foote Cone & Belding in San Francisco was selected in the second review, but after DDB protested over media costs submitted by FCB and its media partner, IPG's Initiative in Los Angeles, the lottery rebid the media portion of the account. IPG's McCann Erickson in Los Angeles was then named the winner, but the decision was rescinded over disclosure.
