WCLC to clearly define "ticket"

The Western Canada Lottery Corporation is changing its definition of a winning ticket, after a woman was allowed to collect her prize with a photocopy.

Earlier this month, a judge awarded a Calgary woman the $100,000 jackpot, even though she only had a copy of the winning ticket. She told lottery officials she'd lost the original.

The lottery corporation refused to validate the ticket, before the court decision. Its concern is that someone could come forward with the actual ticket and it would be on the hook for two prizes.

Spokesman John Matheson says they are working on a new definition of a winning ticket, after the court pointed out that the wording on the ticket should be stronger.

"We're just taking a look at how we can best do it, whether we add lines in certain places to say reproductions are not acceptable," he said.

Lottery tickets have expiry dates printed on them, but no clear rules about what constitutes a winning ticket.
