Powerball

Metro police Armed Robbery Detective Jonathan Kelton yesterday became the largest Powerball winner in the state to date, lottery officials said.

Hopefully, the 26-year department veteran won't have to endure too many comments about how many doughnuts $200,000 will buy.

Kelton, 53, sat down to read the newspaper yesterday, skimming the front page as usual, before turning to check the lottery numbers, lottery officials said in a statement.

That's where his routine ended. He matched five of Wednesday's Powerball numbers and doubled his prize by having chosen the Power Play option.

Kelton, who won about four times his yearly salary, did not return a call for comment. He purchased the winning ticket at the Circle K at 4199 Nolensville Road.

"A while back, I sat down and figured out what number hit most often over a six-month period," he was quoted as saying in the Lottery statement. "Those are the numbers I always play."
