Microsoft officially beats Netscape in browser wars
The Netscape web browser will officially die on February 1, 2008. In the Microsoft vs. Netscape browser wars, that makes Microsoft the official victor. Not that many people are even aware of Netscape's existence at this point, since it currently commands a mere 0.6% of the browser market. For me, it's neither here nor there, since Netscape pretty much works if Lottery Post functions well with Firefox, because Netscape is basically just a re-branded version of Firefox at...

IE6 users can get a performance boost right now
Microsoft release an update to its JavaScript engine ( JScript ), which will give a performance boost to any IE6 user. Since Lottery Post relies upon lots and lots of JavaScript code, this should help every Lottery Post user who still uses IE6. It will eventually be released as an automatic update through the Microsoft Update service, but you can download it right now if you don't want to wait. Here's the blog post announcing the download:...

Gadget mixup at Microsoft *finally* resolved
I've spent the last week trying to get the Lottery Results Gadget re-listed at the Microsoft gadget gallery. You know why? For the exact reason I referred to in a previous post -- there are some intensely jealous Lottery Post competitors out there (term is loosely used, since technically you'd need to be in the same league to compete) who immediately tried to get Microsoft to de-list the gadget. These jerks try to act like regular users who have complaints.&...

Virus protection: Microsoft solution is best (IMHO)
I have blogged about this topic before: I have been recommending for a couple years now about how Microsoft offers what I consider to be the best virus protection -- and it's free. Years ago I came to the conclusion that most, if not all, commercial virus protection software is a racket, designed to scare you year after year into constantly buying the annual upgrades. That's why these packages advise you (amongst other things) about evil cookies that the...

New Amazing Technology
Holy mackerel, I just installed a new piece of hardware which is WAY too cool. My wireless Microsoft mouse broke, so I had to buy a new one. (If you're not using a Microsoft wireless mouse, you are missing out on the best mouse out there.) Anyway, I was just about to buy a replacement of exactly the same thing (Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0) when I noticed that Microsoft now sells that same mouse with a "fingerprint reader". I started doing some more reading...

IE8 Release Candidate 1 is here!
Anyone can now install the first Release Candidate of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. Release Candidate means that it is 100% platform and feature complete, and may have only some minor glitches. Frankly, the beta of IE8 was very good, so I expect this release to be relatively bug-free. (I guess we'll see about that.) Release Candidates are usually safe to install, and in this case Microsoft is even pledging to upgrade everyone who installs...

Applying Vista SP1 caused VS 2008 compiles to fail (includes fix)
Being a Microsoft Developer Network subscriber, yesterday I was able to get my hands on the new Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), which includes hoards of fixes and performance tweaks. The install went well, but is slow. It probably took an hour to install, but that was only after an hour to uninstall the SP1 Release Candidate that I had previously installed. The biggest pain was having to tell my virus protection software that every file that changed on my PC was OK. I wish...

LP Flash content approved by Microsoft for Windows 8
In Windows 8, you have two choices for your web browser: regular desktop mode (the same as you use in Windows 7, Windows XP, etc.) or full-screen Modern UI mode. The full-screen mode is what most computers will use when you buy a new computer with Windows 8 installed. Full-screen mode is actually much safer to use, because Microsoft purposely disables the ability to add browser plug-ins to it. (Browser plug-ins, like Flash or Java, are the biggest cause...

Try out the new Microsoft Security Essentials
This post is for anyone who has looked for good anti-virus/anti-malware software. Microsoft just today came out with a beta of their latest security software, which previously had the code name Morro . The official product name is Microsoft Security Essentials. Like the other Windows Live software Microsoft offers, the new security software is free , and will always remains free. It is a direct replacement for the company's OneCar...
