The pool manager got back to me with an explanation, and I quote: When both the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are both large enough , the decision on which game to play is based on which of the two games presents the best expected value given the current size of the jackpots. In this case, Powerball clearly presents the higher value. I guess that makes sense. Winning $4 million is clearly life changing. Winners can have lawyers create LLCs or trusts to make it difficult for the public to figure out who won, but lotteries don't payout jackpots without knowing who the actual winner is. Beyond security reasons, there may also be tax reporting requirements.

Fun race to watch. If I'm betting on which one gets caught first, I'd actually lean Powerball purely on cadence - three draws a week vs two means more chances to roll AND more chances to die. Mega's been the slow burner since the format change (1 in 290.5M vs PB's 1 in 292.2M, so basically identical odds per line now), but fewer draws per week means MM jackpots age slower. Impact of World Cup on Lottery Sales
I don't know about Las Vegas and the Casinos across the country, but, is it fair to say that the World Cup being held in the US has had no impact on Lottery Sales? I think the jackpots increase has been consistent with the past before the games started. Voted Very Little myself. The $5 price fundamentally changed the value math, and I don't think enough people have run the numbers on what you're actually getting for the extra $3. The jackpot odds barely moved: the big prize went from 1 in 302,575,350 to 1 in 290,472,336 with the removal of one Mega Ball. That's about a 4% improvement. Statistically real, practically meaningless when you're that deep in the hundreds of millions. So you're not really paying $5 for better jackpot odds. Whe
