Kansas files lawsuit against accused lottery rigger
A lawsuit by the state of Kansas accuses the man at the center of a multi-state lottery number-fixing scam of working with two others to redeem two rigged lottery tickets for $44,000.
Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Tuesday he filed the Shawnee County lawsuit against Eddie Tipton and two others who Schmidt says turned in the tickets to the Kansas Lottery. Schmidt alleges Tipton used software manipulation to rig the tickets.
Tipton, 54, of Flatonia, Texas, once worked as the

The George of Ask George was initially our former lottery commissioner, George Weems. He was railroaded, in my opinion, into taking the fall for the Sidewalks for Votes scandal, which preceded our scratch-off ticket scandal by about ten weeks. While holding the commissioner's chair, Mr. Weems was appointed comptroller for the city of East Chicago, presumably by Mayor Pastrick (who had no authority to appoint a state official to a local post). Clearly, Mr. Weems was hopelessly unqualified for

Court rejects Colorado man's claim to full $4.8M lottery jackpot he unwittingly split with scammers
Even though Amir Massihzadeh of Boulder, Colorado, was the only legitimate winner of a Colorado Lotto jackpot worth $4.8 million in 2005, he's not eligible to claim the full winnings, the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled in a decision released Thursday.
Massihzadeh, one of three ticket holders to win that jackpot, accepted his prize of $568,990, after taxes. But 10 years later, a criminal investigation exposed a scheme to rig lotteries across state lines, and officials determined the other two

Iowa lottery lawsuit granted class action, affecting 7.2 million tickets in 19 states
By Jason Clayworth
A judge has granted class-action status in a lawsuit that claims people who purchased at least 7.2 million lottery tickets in 19 states were scammed by a former national lottery IT director who worked in Iowa.
Eddie Tipton, the former IT director for the Multi-State Lottery Association in Urbandale, added a secret code to random number-generating computer software in 2005 that allowed him to narrow the drawing's winning odds from as great as 5 million to 1 down to 200 to

Lottery scammer rigged more drawings than first thought, records show
The computer program that a former lottery security official used to rig drawings worth millions of dollars in Iowa and other states was more expansive than investigators first discovered, court records filed last week show.
Eddie Tipton, a former employee of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in Clive, wrote the code to allow him to predict the randomly drawn numbers of multimillion-dollar jackpots in as many as 17 states and claim the cash prizes.
The code remained active and und

Iowa Supreme Court hears lottery rigging case
The Iowa Supreme Court heard arguments Monday on whether purely circumstantial evidence was enough to convict a former lottery employee of rigging Iowa's Hot Lotto game to win a $16.5 million jackpot.
Eddie Tipton was convicted of tampering with Iowa's Hot Lotto game and attempting to cash a ticket in early 2015, but an appeals court reversed his conviction on the charge of attempting to redeem the lottery ticket, finding it was barred by the three-year statute of limitations.
