El Gordo holds annual Christmas drawing, awarding billions
People lucky enough to hold tickets with the number 71198 were blessed with thousands of euros in prize money in Spain's bumper Christmas lottery Friday.
Children from Madrid's San Ildefonso school called out the top prize number three hours after the much-followed, nationally televised draw began around 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) at Madrid's Teatro Real opera house.
The lottery, known as El Gordo, or The Fat One, will dish out 2.4 billion euros (US$2.8 billion) in prizes this year.

$675 MILLION: POWERBALL SETS ALL-TIME LOTTERY JACKPOT RECORD
El Gordo is not a lottery, it is a raffle, and it does NOT have a jackpot. It has a big prize pool, but NOT a jackpot. The top prize that anyone can win is a few million Euro.
Any writer who claims that El Gordo has the world's biggest lottery jackpot is wrong. It is common for reporters in the mainstream news media to be ignorant about lotteries, and throw around terms like jackpot interchangeably.
To be clear: a jackpot is an ever-increasing prize pool (until it is won) that can be won b

Beach town hits jackpot in Spain's El Gordo lottery
With wide smiles, elated lottery winners popped corks on bottles of sparkling wine Tuesday in the southern beach city of Roquetas de Mar, where tickets bearing the top prize number in Spain's Christmas lottery were sold.
The winning number 79140 appeared on 1,600 tickets in the lottery known as El Gordo (The Fat One), with each ticket holder winning 400,000 (US$434,800).
The lottery has taken on special importance in recent years as Spain struggled through a real estate bubble and the Euro

Penn. Lottery declares 1st raffle a success
50% is about average for a state lottery -- not too bad. El Gordo is a very old game. If El Gordo were created today, I would wager that it would have closer to a 50% payout. That's just the nature of the industry these days.

El Gordo awards over €2.4 billion in famous Christmas raffle
Winning numbers for top prizes announced this morning
By Kate Northrop
The Spanish Lottery has released the winning numbers for El Gordo (The Fat One), the most well-known, largest raffle in history, measured by prize payout. In 2020, the Christmas raffle is handing out over 2.4 billion (US$ 2.9 billion) in prizes. That's 28 million (US$34 million) more than last year.
Traditionally, two children from the San Ildefonso school sing out the winning five-digit number for the 4 million (US$

Spain's Christmas lottery is still "El Gordo"
In tough times, Spaniards trim trees, not their lottery ticket purchases
Includes video report
On the morning of Dec. 22, Spain will be glued to radios and TV sets. A monotonous chant of children's voices will float through the air of homes, cafeterias and offices for hours.
It is the lyrical event of the season, a kickoff to Christmas celebrations. Children dressed up in navy blue and gray uniforms sing, not Christmas carols, but the winning numbers and prizes for the Loteria de Navida

Anybody Playing El Gordo This Year ?
I don't know if tickets are still on sale for the December drawing ... had hopes there would be an El Gordo game in the US or North America for 2015.
Another year wasted ... one big drawing in Dec ... what kind of a jackpot could that be with tickets being sold all year?
The only thing close ... in my mind ... for a mini El Gordo in the US is the PA Raffle going off four times a year.
It's not even close, but it's all there is for now ! ... a low number of tickets being sold and eight t

Only one major lottery in EU or US is not rigged: El Gordo, in Spain
El Gordo, Spain - once again, like for the last 190 years, children draw the numbers live in front of a large audience.
El Gordo, Spain - Children saved the world's richest lottery ($2.4 bn) - the only major lottery in Illuminatiland that is not rigged
Reminder - jackpot of all other major state lotteries is a total fraud (1).
