Andy Rooney: Lotteries and lottery players are stupid
Editor: The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney, originally broadcast on March 19, 2006, and re-broadcast last night. The study that Rooney quotes, saying that poor people gamble the most, is completely false. All credible studies show that all demographics gamble roughly the same amount. Rooney's commentary is shown here to illustrate the ignorant and myopic arguments of some anti-lottery critics. I suppose it's true that I'm too easily annoye ...

New TV drama about lottery winners gets mixed reviews
In 'Windfall,' Money Buys Complications Galore Washintgon Post Windfall, NBC's new drama series about a pack of lottery winners, is not likely to be a long-term winning ticket for the struggling network. Fortunately, this soap opera disguised as a prime-time show is an addictive frolic for summertime, when reality TV takes over the airwaves. Windfall's plot does sound like a reality show: Twenty people from differing backgrounds split a $386 million jackpot after winning with a group ...

Lottery fever is alive and well in New Jersey
They call themselves the Coolers, based on the 2003 Las Vegas thriller The Cooler, starring William Macy. He plays a character who is hired in old-school casinos to subdue high rollers' action, until he falls in love. Unlike the movie, this group has not encountered Lady Luck and has yet to pinpoint its cooler. But that doesn't stop them from continuing their 15-year tradition of Thursday lottery lunches. It's no coincidence that Thursday just happens to be when the Pick 6 is drawn. ...

What would the experts do with a lottery jackpot?
Investment Hanging on to all those millions can be as tough as winning in the first place If you won the lottery, as eight Nebraska meatpackers did last month, splitting a $365 million jackpot, what investment would be at the top of your wish list? Without a plan, the reality is that 70 percent of all lottery winners will squander away their winnings in a few years, said Peter Toll, president of Family Heritage First in West Linn and past president of Oregon's Financial Planning Ass ...

2005 a trying year for Texas Lottery chairman
Tom Clowe says he was never much of a gambling man, but he was willing to take his chances when he asked Gov. George W. Bush in 1998 to give him an opportunity to serve the state in a volunteer capacity. I said to Governor Bush: I'm ready to do public service now. Give me the worst job that you've got,' Clowe recalled in a recent interview. And, man, he did! Bush appointed Clowe in November 1998 to the board that oversees the Texas Lottery Commission, which was still reeling from a string of ...
