Vermont Lottery offers new self-service machines
It's a busy travel day at the Guilford Rest Area, and tourists all seem to have the same reason for stopping. Probably one of the best rest areas I have ever been to in the country, said Tim Donahue from Lester, Massachusetts. We enjoy stopping here because it is a beautiful rest stop. Probably one of the most beautiful in the country, said John McGuire from Torrington, Connecticut. Any time we come up to this area I love this rest stop. It's just beautiful here, said Dave Ranan from ...

Tri-State lottery players get extra chance to win Pick 4
Players of the Tri-State Pick 4 lottery had two chances to win this week when a ball left in the drawing machine led to two sets of winning numbers. Lottery officials said they discovered that a ball was inadvertently left in the chute of the drawing machine before Tuesday's evening winning numbers were drawn, so the number wasn't included in the drawing. Officials decided to hold another drawing Wednesday and pay out on both sets of Pick 4 numbers for the Tuesday evening draw. The two ...

Vt. Lottery computer glitch creates extra winners
Linda Hebert says she didn't think twice when she purchased two nearly identical computer-generated Fast Play tickets at North End Deli Mart earlier this month. They looked like winners to me, Hebert says of the twin Red Hot Numbers tickets that she has been patiently waiting for the Vermont Lottery Commission to honor since she bought them on her way to work Aug. 4. Turns out Hebert's double win was not due to lady luck but a computer malfunction and she wasn't alone in winning that day. ...

Vermont adds multi-state Hot Lotto game
The Vermont lottery is 31 years old this year. Lottery revenues after expenses have grown substantially since its early days. But right now the recession is cutting into those revenues. Back in 1978 the Vermont lottery generated just $1.7 million. That number had grown to $102 million as of last year. But like everything else, lottery revenues are down this year. At The Middle Road Market in Milton, the customers are well familiar with the lottery games. The owners, state representative Ro ...

Governor's plan to lease Vt. state lottery comes up a loser
Some called it the final nail in the coffin. Some called it a eulogy. Whatever they called it, members of the state Senate said a bill they passed Tuesday will likely stand as a tombstone over Gov. James Douglas' proposed lease of the state lottery. The bill seems fairly mundane in itself. It requires lawmakers' approval before the lottery could be leased something that might well have been required by law already. And the administration was already planning on obtaining Legislative accepta ...

Vermont could become first state to privatize lottery
No other state has leased its lottery, but Vermont wants to be the first. Governor Jim Douglas hopes the lease will bring in $50 million dollars for the state budget, on top of the $23 million the lottery brings in now. Today in a special report, VPR's John Dillon explores the advantages and disadvantages of what is so far an untested idea. (sound of lottery machine printing ticket) (Dillon) Johanne Gray is a regular at this convenience store in Montpelier. She likes to play the ...

VT Lottery had $1 million in unclaimed prizes
The Vermont Lottery ended its budget year with $1 million in unclaimed prizes for winning scratch-off tickets, a $400,000 jump over the amount of prize money that players failed to collect the previous year. The extra money went to the state's Education Fund. Why would people fail to collect their winnings? That is a good question, said Alan Yandow, executive director of the Vermont Lottery Commission. People have the opportunity to scratch the instant ticket right away, he said. ...

A Swanton, Vermont, man who read a news report about unclaimed Megabucks winnings discovered he had one of the $10,000 tickets in his wallet, Vermont Lottery officials said Thursday.
