Should states stop giving out free tickets as a prize?

Yes. I'd rather win actual money. [ 19 ]  [67.86%]
No. I like to get a free crack at a bigger prize. [ 9 ]  [32.14%]

Free ticket games actually help the average lottery player, because of how lottery accounting works. If a game has a 60% payback ratio, (at least in MA) that means 60% of NET sales (total sales minus free bets). So say 10% of the tickets out there win a free bet. This means that the total cash prizes are going to be 60% of 90% of the total face value of all of the tickets in the game, or 54% of the face value for the game.

But for the typical lottery player, free bets are as good as cash, since the next time they buy a ticket, they'll have an extra buck in their pocket. (The math doesn't work so well for a bettor who doesn't play regularly.) So for the typical player, you add on the 10% of face value that you can win through free bets, and suddenly you've got a 64% game instead of a 60% game.

To look at it another way, the state takes its cut off of the total amount of MONEY spent on tickets. If you get a $1 free bet instead of $1 cash, the state doesn't take a cut of it. And, in theory, you need to pay taxes on the $1 cash, but not the $1 free bet (this is somewhat relevant in MA, since we can't deduct any gambling losses for state income taxes, even if we win more than we lose).

NY no longer cross-promotes their scratch games with free tickets.

Here in TN you can trade in a ticket for money if you know which store to play.  Some stores are picky about their tickets though.  I wanted to take 3 free $1 tickets and get 3 lotto 5 tickets for them.  The clerk freaked and said no.  Needless to say I ask the lottery if that was legal and they said yes.  So.....  I don't shop their anymore.  lol.

Here in Illinois they did away with free tickets for awhile on the 1 dollar tickets so the could say they were giving away more cash prizes but now they have went back to puting free ticket back on the tickets. Which makes no sense to me. Because some places still give me the dollar for the free tickets anyways......

I got a free ticket the other day from a keno scratch it.  I wish I would have gotten the two dollars instead of two consecutive keno games.
