I think 6/49 would be best matrix for Lotto Texas.
While millions of Texans buy Lotto tickets, a large of percentage of the state's residents are opposed to gambling.
Texas population is roughly 23 million. One would expect that a third would be in the game every Wednesday and Saturday. But, a review of the sales, posted at lottoreport.com, shows the average is about 1.5 to 2 million. This number increases when the jackpots grow, such as the recent Mega Millions jackpot, but falls drastically when the jackpot is won.
New York has a population of roughly 20 million. About 3 million tickets are sold in the Mega Millions game.
California has a population of about 36 million. MM sales average about 2.5 million.
These estimates increase as the jackpot grows, of course.
Sales of other lottery games in NY and Calif probably mirror MegaMillions sales.
Bottomline, millions of Texans have either lost interest in the lottery, brought about by many questionable changes designed to make an extra buck, or simply ignore it.
The TLC needs to wake up, smell the roses and adopt a game that is more suitable for 2 million regular players.
I think 6/49 would be that matrix. And, like 6/50 or 6/54, there will be times when there will no winners and the jackpot would get large enough to attract more gamblers.
