lol Isn't the whole point of increasing the number of combinations to produce record setting jackpots?

I think so. And in turn the jackpots get bigger and more people come out to play.

      chewie:

Slot machines pay off in the 90+ percent range. It's NY Lotto that pays no more than 40%.

You're probably right, I just threw out a number; to make a point. I watched the Travel Channel, and on one of their shows they talked about the payouts, and they varied so much I lost track. My last trip to Vegas I put $20.00 in the machine for one multi-million dollar roll; didn't care what the odds were. Lost, walked away and never went back. Prior to that I hadn't played the slots since, around, 1968. Hadn't been to Vegas prior to this year, since Elvis was a headliner. No a big gambler; although I love the lottery. ME against the number machine!

      Cheers

I'd say - the 15.6 million tickets sold is a record for Powerball at the starting jackpot.

Ok lets imagine this why don't PB or MM just start drawings at say $150 million and go up from there ? Surely there would be enough money, then we would have record jackpot,s all the time?  win win deal huh?

Aren't they starting them at $15M now, regardless?  Whereas the starting point before was $7M?

Not big on savings accounts are you? Spend it as fast as you receive it type?

Under your plan, every Powerball state would have gone bankrupt last year; and Powerball would have ceased to function. Not exactly a goal I entirely support. That would limit my dream to a 40 second nap.

                    Cheers

Yes the starting jackpot is $15 million now.  The previous starting point was $10 million, and they usually sold 9-11 million tickets at that point then.

Subscription tickets might play a part in the increased sales.  With all the mayhem a week ago, I'm sure many people were buying tickets for the next 3 or 4 draws...so that's got to help sales spike a bit.

People who win small prizes during a big jackpot run often play for a new jackpot, putting their winnings back in the game.
