Did I miss the part about the $340M winners contribution to the town?  Or did they just show up in their gas-gussler and smile?  I would think you would want to contribute to the community you live in; especially a small town community.

I live in a small town..You think I would give some of my winnings to my city..I DON'Tt THINK SO..what did my city give me?? Did they go in halfers with me??  Did they repay me for all my losses in previous drawings??....LMAO...Fair play is fair play...my city isn't getting squat from me...

But would you show up at a ceremony about a give-away from a lottery (store seller) ? They did!

Now, don't be a ......it's not the city itself, but the" poor and needy" of the city that needs the support...Certainly, you would want to share something w/the charities that help them....Afterall, we don't live in the world alone......Last night I watched Prime Time Live.....and one of the segments discussed the needs of the very poor, and how important it is to ensure that monetary contributions are given to the neediest charities which help the Homeless, and the people living in the shelters, because often, the wealthy people are giving their funds to Universities, and Medical Issues which already have millions of dollars in their coffers.....

Let me make a wild guess, some how, giving money to a university or medical facility gets you a better taax break.  Some how, it has to be the answer.  Too many names of rich people on buildings to be otherwise.

It is individual's choice what he wants to do and what he does not want to do. Others should not say that you should give to commuinty or should not give to community. Also I hear from many people that why should I give to a community which did not give me. I fail to understand this logic. Communities are not for supporting bankrupt or are for feeding people and also they may not have funds even for something that you think that they must have provided. Communities try to bond people together and definitely try to help people if it is feasible. There are many rich people who fund various community programs and or give to various other programs which help people but there are many rich people who do not contribute. Here again it is an individual's choice what he wants to do. Since a lottery winner gets suddenly rich (and he may know what bad times) people expect that he may contribute to the good causes in society and I also think that one should contrbute. It is not that you are returning a favor to society but it is a normal and expected duties of living in a society. But there are exceptions to the rule who do not want to do so.

I would dontate to charities...not my city....my city is not associated with charities that I like. Such as The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, American Heart Association...Charities run on donations...my city doesn't...

LOLOLOLOLO........yes sir, that's just about the size of it......and unfortunately for the homeless, living on the Streets, in the shelters, languishing in the Subway Stations..ect..none of them has acquired enough education to go to the Universities, or utilize the Medical Facilities which operate on all those $$$$$$$$$$$$.....

Lewis the manager of the store that sold the winning ticket spoke of giving money to the community, not the Powerball multi-millionaires. If Lottery winners don't get involved with some form of intelligent charitable giving on a regular basis, it would be very sad for them. Not only is it wise from a tax point of view, but giving money to the Foodbanks, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Homeless Shelters,

Foundtions for the Blind, Kids with Cancer, Scholarship Funds for Poor Kids etc, helps you justify telling your PARASITIC FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT THEY CAN GO BUZZ OFF!!!!! Helping the needy, not the greedy....

One thing that many people don't realize is that the $5 you or I might donate multiplied by millions counts just as much.  So those who don't dig deep when they have very little probably won't feel too generous if they win big. Regarding where or what a wealthy person should contribute to is nobody's business, but most lottery winners don't have an endless pot of gold either.  It's important to invest your money wisely so it can grow and you can continue to give. Somebody would go crazy if he starts thinking about all the needy people above listed. Your neighbor's child needs an operation, your friend lost his job, your sister's boyfriend's cousin can't afford his medicine and, if you don't rescue them, hundreds of helpless dogs & cats will be euthanized at the town shelter... and that's just the tip of the iceberg. So you pick your favorite causes and donate your time and a certain percentage of your money every year instead of trying to save the world. 

 Intelligent charitible givings doe not include being a sugar daddy for anyone. A Lottery winner can't save the world...my point was a sensible attitude towards helping those in need is good whether or not one wins big money. But, newly found millionaires who might not have thought too often about the plight of others owe it to themselves to get atuned to their new reality and do the right thing. A steady modest giving helps alot of folks without hurting the generous donors. Everyone makes their own minds up, but most of the really rich people I know of are also the most gernerous. Look up "THE LAW OF TENFOLD RETURN" on the web.

I live in a small suburb also....I dont neccessarily donate alot, but what I do is make sure that most of my expenses (food, gas, lottery tickets, medical supplies, clothes, etc...) are purchased within the city limits....therefore I support the community and the local taxes

"JUST".......no one here is suggesting that the winner of the "big$$$$$" go out and save the world, and I'm sure it's readily apparent that what the winner decides to do is "ones business" however, because we live in a "very needy" society, there is always something good the winner can do to make a difference, even if they "create" a charity for a" special group" of people in their communities.....and that group should not be "themselves" lololollo.....for it's obvious, we will all indulge ourselves w/little to no encouragement.....

 Just an observation: whenever the topic of charitable "giving" is mentioned, there is usually some person that self-righteously exclaims," I am not here to save the world"...or, "I gotta concentrate on investing the money for my future" or some such self centered rubbish. Listen...anyone who Wins a Lottery Grand Prize Jackpot is BLESSED and to share one's good fortune by helping the truly needy further extends that blessing. Sure, invest your money, but remember, "YOU JUST WON THE LOTTERY"!

A 150 MILLION  to one shot! Loosen up "the sphincter" and be generous to the truly needy! Man...you win 100 million bucks and are still stingy,chiseling  porcupine? You won!! (Relax that certain little round muscle.)

Why is it that people who feel they need to make a point use very bold and large letters? Usually on boards and chats it's considered to be very rude as if one is "yelling" to get noticed.  As far as being self-centered goes, please look in the mirror. In fact, re-read what I originally wrote. I said that people often choose some favorite philanthropies and donate their time and money to them. I also said that, as broke as I am, I give whatever I can and that my $5 is just as important as a rich person's $5,000. Most of my posts mention the importance of being charitable. Anyway, I never get into long, argumentative threads. They're pointless and immature. It seems as if many people who post on this board need a lot of personal attention. It's really sad I guess. Maybe they have low self-esteem and the internet is the only place where they can sound important. Investing money intelligently, by the way, isn't "rubbish" because if you give away millions the first year, they'll be nothing left to donate in the future. If you build a center for the homeless, give counseling, start a business and create jobs, you make a much greater contribution than passing out money on the street.  If you think $50 million will save the world, you obviously have never been involved in charities of any significant size or have no idea how many people need help. Have you ever participated in a fund-raiser? A new hospital, for example, averages around $200 million - that's just to build it without medical services. But since you mentioned homeless people, let's say you build 200 houses at $80,000 each for familes who lost their homes during a disaster like Katrina. That's $16 mil. But without jobs, they'd need help paying the taxes, the utilities, etc. So maybe you'll buy each of them a car and pay their medical bills. Since after one takes the cash value and pays taxes, there really isn't close to half left, if you won $100 mil you'd soon be running out of money...and you haven't touched the surface. What about the victims of the tsunami? What about all those children in St Jude's Hospital with cancer? There are many people who earn millions every year and they live extravagant lifestyles, but they also give more to charities than you or I will see in a lifetime. Celebrities like Danny Thomas and Paul Neuman have changed the lives of thousands of families by their good works, but they established well organized foundations. Being responsible and making smart investments isn't selfish, it's part of handling money wisely so it lasts, not just for the winner, but for others who need it.  It's amazing how you took a few words out of an entire post, rearranged them & twisted their meaning for your own personal rant.  Grow up!

BTW, I notice that some of these "loud" posters are newer members and wonder if we have a few trolls on this board who change identity. Not that I've been here for a long time..just an observation.
