Oscar nominated filmmakers are directing lottery documentary

Thanks so much to all of you who emailed me your responses to my previous post. We received some really wonderful stories and we would like to explain a little more about our project and give more of you an opportunity to be part of our new documentary film.

The creators of the Oscar nominated and Emmy-winning documentary film, “Spellbound”, are looking for interesting stories to include in their current documentary about the lottery that will explore themes of money, luck, and reaching for the American dream. Over the last two years, we have traveled around the country, conducting interviews with lottery winners and individuals associated with the lottery, and now we are looking to tell your story.

We have been impressed while reading the lottery post forum and seeing what a dynamic community there is surrounding the lottery.  Many of you have given a great deal of thought to such a variety of issues within the complex world of the lottery. We hope that you will consider sharing your thoughts and stories with us.

We are particularly interested in speaking with people who play the lottery often but who have not yet won a big jackpot. We would specifically like to hear about your experiences playing the lottery and your ideas about how your life might change if you win the big one.

This is NOT a reality show or a news investigation. Ultimately, we want our documentary to be more than a narrow look at the lottery phenomenon but rather an involving and multifaceted movie that paints a big and broad portrait of modern America.

If you are interested in sharing some of your lottery stories, you may call or email us at our office in Los Angeles. If after speaking on the phone, we feel your story would be an exciting one for our documentary, we will consider coming to your town to interview you in person.

For more information about us, and our film, “Spellbound”, please visit our website at www.spellboundmovie.com.

“Spellbound” is a portrait of eight children competing in the National Spelling Bee. We are determined to bring the same sensibility to our current work, highlighting human interest stories connected with the lottery.

We wish you much luck and look forward to hearing from you!

So is this an advertisement for a documentary film?

      From the article:

"This is NOT a reality show or a news investigation. Ultimately, we want our documentary to be more than a narrow look at the lottery phenomenon but rather an involving and multifaceted movie that paints a big and broad portrait of modern America."

It's a cinch, then, that they don't want to hear from LosingJeff or me. Apparently, they want warm, fuzzy stories which have little to do with the battles we fight with state lotteries and legislatures every day.

Come, Pinky; we must prepare for tomorrow night...

We are interested in hearing a variety of stories and points of view.  We'd be happy to speak with Jim695 or Losing Jeff or anyone else who would like to share their thoughts about the lottery.  I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about our project. You may email me off list, if you prefer.

              Thanks,

She can contact any one through private email.  Even non-paying members, have this option.

I agree with Jim. They seem to want warm fuzzy stuff. Well, as you all know, not too much warm and fuzzy coming from Jim and I. If I want to watch a movie then I will pull out "Sands of Iwo Jima". That's what will motivate me; the days of great men and integrity.

Thanks for all your responses and PMs. I’ve really enjoyed the many phone conversations I’ve had with you as well. For those I haven’t spoken with yet, I would just like to clarify that we have no agenda going into this documentary. We are open to all different stories. Also, you should understand that my original list of questions was not really a survey, but more of an example of what we would like to discuss in greater depth. Please continue to email and I hope to speak with more of you soon.

                        Thanks,

                        Laura

I'm kind of surprised about your comments. No her post wasn't "an advertisement", and Jim, I think what you mentioned about battling legislatures would fit into a documentary like a glove.

I don't see how anyone could have got "only looking for warm fuzzys" out of the OP.

There's nothing to be hostile about, gee folks.

Nobody is being hostile about it. This simple fact is that we are on a mission. A documentary about Lottery and the American Dream will not help our cause. We are not looking for that type of exposure. We are confident in our own abilities and goals.
