  I was about to start a new poll when this thread came up on the active topics.  So, I may just as well ask my question here.  This is a question that has been bugging me for sometime now.

  My question is this:  Can you tell, just from reading of one's posts, whether or not that poster's first language is English?

  For me, I can tell most of the time, but not all the time.  I can usually tell from the poster's choice of words and expressions, and from his sentence construction.

    English is neither my 1st nor 2nd language, in fact my 3rd.

    That explain why my post count is so low.

  Wow, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  Thank you for responding.  I understand exactly what you're saying. 

  The  other day, I was pointing out to a friend a flock of tiny birds under the mulberry tree in my backyard.  Without much thought, I blurted out, "Look, birdlings!"  He looked at me quizzically, and repeated, "Birdlings?"

  That is why I try to learn as much as I can, common American words and expressions.
