mike i had those problems your having most are simple fixes.

Sometimes it's can be the phone from the pole to the house. If it's old and the insulation in peeling frayed etc. It gets hot in the sun and can slow things down or cause problems.

Sometimes it's the server that connects you to aol. If that server is overloaded it automatically sends your request to the next available server but that server could be overwhelmed too. This is one of the main reasons i switched .

how old is that PC you got. You might need a newer updated driver.

no i doubt it i had the same problems almost every summer. When school let out it seamed like every aol connection i had was overwhelmed all day but at night after 12pm things would work fine. i chalked the experiance up to, too many people trying to get online via a phone connection.

mike what version of aol do you have.

                    when you said

quote when i talk on the phone line there's static.

                    computer connections don't like static.

Hey I can relate to your problem! I have dial up (AOL 9.0) and I have had similar problems. This is what I did and it worked. On the main sign in page of AOL, go to "sign on options", then "add numbers" and see if there are any more that won't be long distance for you. If you already have them all listed, just click "Edit numbers" and change the dialing order so that it calls a different one first. I change mine up periodically. It seems like at times, one is faster than the other. Anyway. Hope you get it fixed!

well then you have all the tools you need to fix just about anything. spyware protection and viruses. you dont need any add on's. loading your pc with multiple spyware and virus protection can cause your pc to run slower because they are constantly running in the background.

As far as your phone line is concerned this is the first place to look. you can call the phone company and have them check the line. Also unplug anything in the house that plugs into the phone line and re insert them.

how old is the PC you are using. if your pc is 5 yrs or older then you might need to update your modem drivers.

Putting a new modem in woln't fix the problem if your phone line is bad or there is trouble on the line.

we had a guy 5 house from me they cut the phone line on the back of the house and for 2 months we had trouble with our phone service until someone from the phone co. fixed the downed line.

i bought this computer brand new in march of 2002.so you could say its a few months away from being 5 years old.have had a lot of fun with it.i've been thinking if i hit on something big again i just might go get a new one.until then like you said it could be the phone line, broke modem, adaptor, etc. i work so many hours by the time i come in i'm lazy and forget to mess with it.i think the first thing i'm going to do on the list is call the phone company.our line has had a lot of static.............

Good luck on Cable. I use DSL myself. Have had absolutely no interruption of service. Even had service when I couldn't even dial out on the phone, no idea how that worked.

We use to have cable tv a few years ago, service was so bad, each month included an average of 5 days of prorated rebate for loss of service. And the really bad part was, all we got was 30 channels and that included 1 HBO, Cinemax and Showtime. When Stargate went from Showtime to Sci-Fi channel, I convinced my wife to switch to Dish Network because we didn't get Sci-Fi on Cable. The month we canceled our cable service, we was paying $3 per EACH channel we got. For a little less money, we got well over 500 channels (most I will never look at) and every few months, we get a coupon for a free pay-per-view movie.

                              Anyway, have fun folks,

                              Sir Metro
