If you have AOL, definitely call AOL and see if it is a temporary AOL problem.
Also tell AOL that you are seriously considering switching to another service (cable, dsl, etc) and you will get transferred to a "Customer Retention Specialist" who will then probably offer you a chaper rate (for your same AOL service). Ask them what is the best they can do for you (price wise) because you do not consider your current AOL rate as competitive. Some areas of the country have DSL for as little as $25-$26 now through local phone companies (our local BellSouth offers a version of DSL for $25.95).
One advantage of DSL is that you can use your phone to make and receive calls even when you are online...saves the price of a second phone line.
AOL is over priced anyway and you might as well get a cheaper rate for the time you will still be using AOL.

ok once more if your having static on your phone then that same static is going to the modem since both are connected to the same telephone pole. (Modems need a clear signal to function at the best speed)
One it dosen't cost a cent for you to have them check the line tell them you do not wish to have a repair man come to your home he she will check the lines condition right from wherever he or she is sitting. they will ask you to stay off the line for a few minutes while they check the lines in your area. then he or she will call you back after they preform the test. They will then tell you whether it's on their end or think it might be on yours.
given the fact that you are hearing static on your end automatically tells me that somewhere in the line either in your home or from your home to the pole or from the pole to the next junction box or from that box to the next box or anywhere in your zip code. something is amiss. When you pick up the phone and get a dial tone it should be clear as no sounds other than the normal signal should be heard any other noise be it someones else talking hisses pops any weird sound other than the normal sound is a problem in the line.
Unplug all your phone lines in the house including your PC's . then just plug in the phone jack. pick up the handset if you still hear static then you have a bad connection. Somewhere. It doest necessarly have to be in your house it coud be a house across the street down the street next door whatever.
If this is the case a repairman should be checking the poles in your area. This is no cost to you because you don't not need them in your house unless your phone lines in the house are old and failing. Now since i'm not there i cant diagnose your problem from here but you should know the condition of your phone lines in the house. If you have pulled the phone from the wall or otherwise drove a nail or punctured the line with a staple whatever any of these things could create static.
the worse part is when two loose wires are just touching ever so slightly they can create static. Hence if a line has come loose in the area or down on the ground and got wet everybody in the neighborhood would be having static if they use phones connected to the pole in your block. Ask your nearest neighbor if they are having static. If they are then their is a problem on the telephone pole or wherever.
My fee for this information is free. Attitional info will cost you as i'm going to send you a bill. LOL

it seem you have only two problem:
phone static and your computer have worm (connection message always appear even when you already sign off)
you may DIY to check your phone line. if you need to replace the cable you might replace with LAN CABLE CAT 5 or more.
how it work site may be good resource or any of DIY site
if you have worm then you must restore your registry or you may recover all system for laptop computer they had recovery disc
if you have desktop computer you need to back up your system first (after clean installation) and ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR DATA first before you run recovery disc or you might loose it because your hard drive will override with backup system.

If you're browsing the internet at work, then your system administrator should be made aware of the problems you're having, all these suggestions about changing your internet service or restoring the system don't mean much if you're not using your own computer.

Hi Lotto Mike;
Well what I can see here (If you have dial up) you why don't you get DSL? And as for your modem it is in or should be inside your computer. What I think here is that your modem will need an update if you can give it it's update and or (Now this is my reccommendation) to get a US. Robotics Modem. Now this is the top of the line modem for dial up.
But I strongly think that you should get DSL.... It's faster and better.

I have SBC/DSL and it is costing me $17.00 for the 3.0 high speed and it is very, very good for me. (The initial price for regular DSL is $12.99 for a 1.5 speed).
I also have a AMD 2.0 Celeron Computer with a 512 ram and a 40 gig hard drive.
that my friend and I had put together and is working very good. You guys need to upgrade your computers and get with the dsl...... once you get this dsl, you all won't go back to dial up....... and for get Aol! to much garbage....

i have more trouble this morning.........
aol was unable to maintain a connection because your modem stopped responding.
this happens often
your modem stoped responding..... if the signal was lost due to static on the line. At any point during your session then the modem disconnects. This is why i said to call the phone co and have them run a test. NO cost for this service no one will come to your house it takes approx 15 minutes.
