Stingray kills 'Croc Hunter' Steve Irwin

CAIRNS, Australia, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Australia's internationally renowned "Crocodile Hunter," Steve Irwin was killed Monday by a stingray barb to the heart as he was filming underwater.

Irwin, 44, was struck in shallow waters as he was filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef called "Ocean's Deadliest", The Australian reported.

His crew pulled him aboard his research vessel, Croc One, summoned a rescue helicopter and sped to a meeting point 30 minutes away as they performed CPR on him, reports said.

The Melbourne-born naturalist's "Crocodile Hunter" program was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and is shown around the world on the Discovery cable network. Irwin also starred in movies and helped develop the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Marine experts said the stingray was about 8 feet across with a jagged, 10-inch barb on its tail.

Irwin is survived by his U.S.-born wife, Terri, daughter Bindi, 8, and three-year-old son Bob.

At least Steve died what he loved doing. Not too many people have that opportunity. What he was doing I'm sure he didn't consider "work".

Goes to show you that life is a gamble every day. A man who wrestled with crocodiles, snakes and alligators got bitten by a stingray and died. I guess next time I go into the Gulf and there are stingrays all around me, I'll take them a little more seriously. They really are beautiful to watch, but I never realized how deadly the toxins can be.  Steve did a lot to attract Americans to Australia and promote the preservation of wildlife there. The title "Crocodile Hunter" was such a misnomer, all for publicity. I doubt if he ever "hunted" anything, although I didn't know him personally. Peace to his family, especially the 2 young children.

                I agree...R.I.P. good friend.

The thing is that I have family that have been stung many times by stingrays, but never was in serious jeopardy. Very painful I am sure, but supposedly it got Steve in the one spot you can't afford. Kind of like getting hit in the temple just right can kill you.

reminds me of grizzly man and mr chocolate. this guy was just plain dumb. the odds of getting killed by a grizzly are much higher than getting done in by a sting ray.

I loved watching this guy, but could see he wasn't heading for a good end if he kept doing crazy stuff.  Always figured he'd end up in the belly of the beast.

From what they say, people get stung or 'stabbed' by Stingrays quite a bit - but it's usually in an arm or a leg, this one was a direct hit into

his heart.  Anywhere else on the body and he would have survived.

I was watching the CBS Morning Show today and this guy who runs an aquarium in Connecticut said that it's even rare for a sting ray to even sting you unless you are really threatening to kill them...they are generally very docile animals. You can pet them at any zoo I've been to.

Simply put: This was a freak accident. He probably spooked it somehow unknowingly.

Nobody knows what a wild animal might do next. He was out of his environment. He was able to escape the predators on land because he was a bit faster than them. And we don't know if the animals he worked with on the many shows he did were sedated or not.

When he entered the water his ability to react and move swiftly was greatly diminished. According to everyone involved the sting ray was in no danger was not trapped or anything of the sort. But as i stated no one knows what an animal or sea creature will do next.

I'm sorry he is gone but feel bad for the many children who came to know and love him. Many children will have a hard time understanding why this happened.
