I recommend 1024x768. This way on bigger screens it leaves room outside the window and it would run on most systems. I don't know anyone who doesn't have at least that size. If they have smaller it means they may have a very old computer. Can the prg. run on such computers?

Great feedback everyone. I suspected the monitor setting sizes were getting bigger. It's looking like about 90% for 800 x 600 and above; 70% for 1024 x 768 and above. Also, looks like there are a few of us still chiseling out images at the etch-a-sketch setting. I hope this helps other programmers as well. I'll check back a bit more as I'm in process of changing code and design on JADE LSG. This also helps in other form sizes. Obviously, the more monitor real estate, the more information that can be displayed.

1600x1200 at home, 1280x1024 on the road. I'm disappointed with the flatscreens offering less than my current home CRTs. Of course, if I had ever wanted to go hog wild, I once saw a 31" CRT offering 3200x2400..... the dreams, the dreams - sigh.....

The major problem with 3200x2400 is that you would have a very hard time finding a video card to output that resolution.

It's hard enough to find one that can output my resolution (2560 x 1600) -- it requires a card that supports dual-link DVI -- and 2560 x 1600 is the highest resolution that the current slate of dual-link DVI cards go.

Now, you could probably find one if you look hard enough, but you would definitely not have much of a choice, and it would be very expensive. It takes a very fast card and powerful graphics processor and chipset to generate that resolution at a decent scan rate.

It looks like I may do a stratified form design with 3 new different screen sizes and 1 old backward compatible design.

                    Level 0 - 640 x 480 - backward compatible startup, original features.

                    Level 1 - 800 x 600 - normal startup size, new basic features.

                    Level 2 - 1024 x 768 - maximum window size, added wheel info.

                    Level 3 - 1280 x 1024 - maximum window size, added graphic info.
