$340 MILLION: Biggest Mega Millions lottery jackpot ever

Mega Millions

The $340 million jackpot for Tuesday's Mega Millions lottery drawing will be the largest since The Big Game became Mega Millions in May of 2002.

If The Big Game's jackpots are included, the Tuesday Mega Millions jackpot is the second-largest ever to The Big Game's record of $363 Million, set in May of 2000.

The only other lottery jackpots that are comparable to Tuesday's Mega Millions jackpot are Powerball's $340 million jackpot on October 19, 2005 and the $365 million jackpot on February 18, 2006, which currently stands as the largest lottery jackpot in history.

None of the tickets sold for Friday's night's $275 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball.

There were 14 second-prize winners from Friday night's drawing: 3 from California, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Massachusetts, 2 from Michigan, 2 from New Jersey, 2 from New York, 2 from Ohio, and 1 from Washington.  Each ticket matched five numbers to win $250,000.

The 3 second-prize tickets from California will win $355,522 each, since California does not use the same non-jackpot fixed prizes that the other Mega Millions state use.

Another 136 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000, except for 28 of those tickets, sold in California, which are worth $10,388 apiece.

The winning numbers from Friday's drawing were: 14, 21, 33, 35 and 51. The Mega Ball number was 43.

The Texas Megaplier was 4.

The prize money has rolled over 14 times since January 9, the last time there was a jackpot winner. The odds of winning the top prize are approximately 1 in 176 million. The odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes are approximately 1 in 40.

Full details about Mega Millions drawings may be found at USA Mega, including past drawings, after-tax payout amounts, comparison of annuity to cash option, news, statistics, links to draw videos, and a powerful lottery results search engine.

Finally, there will be long lines at my favorite convenience store on the border, so I will have to go to a more out-of-the-way store.

I can't belive nobody won Friday! In fact, less people won the second prize than in the drawing before. It seems so easy....6 numbers and your life changes. I'll be shocked if no one wins Tuesday, but it's nice that the mega millions FINALLY has a Mega jackpot again. This is what people want and why they play, regardless of the odds, I think almost anyone would take a chance at a large jackpot. What's crazy is that there is someone out there who has no idea that in less than a week, his or her life will never be the same. I hope whoever wins is a good person. I would love it to be me, but so would the rest of America, so good luck to all!

If no one wins on Tuesday, this will be the first jackpot over $400 million!

Wouldn't that be nice?

Good luck to everyone hereCheers

"It seems so easy....6 numbers and your life changes."

I know exactly what you mean, MissNYC.  That's why we keep buying lottery tickets!  In fact, I said the same thing last night about a game with much lower odds and a considerably lower jackpot prize.  FL has its own version called MegaMoney drawn on Tues & Fri that has only 4 balls (1-44) and a MB (1-22)   Yet nobody's won since the end of January. I'd have to go back to see how many drawings, but at least 9 or 10.  (it doesn't roll past $2M however)  Still, although I'm on a tight budget, last night I said to myself as I walked past the counter "Gee, it seems so easy. Only 5 numbers and everything would be different. Odds are under 1 in 3 million!" So I bought 2 tickets.  If I feel that way about $2 million, I can't imagine winning $340!!

I'm ready to look at my winning ticket Wednesday morning and  :

You must live in a PowerBall state.  I know the feeling because I live in Ohio about two hours from Indiana and feel the same when PowerBall jackpot is $200M+ and MegaMillions jackpot is -$25M.

This jackpot right here has the potential to be the new record holder.  I mean they raised the jackpot almost $10,000,000 for the last drawing...and we are only $25 million away right now.  Lots of hype now so maybe we will see another record on Tuesday.  It would be amazing if it rolled again because it would be in unprecedented territory then....($400million)

Funny, I live in a MegaMillion State, but as my daughter said to me this afternoon,"we better go buy some tickets in Ohio if we want to win."

Winning at the "Mega" game is slim to no chance here, it seems.

Good Luck to all of you MegaMillion players in MARYLAND!

Well your daughter has a point - if you win it in  Ohio you may claim it anonymously.  Boy I wish Ohio was a little closer to California... looks like a lot of out-of-state residents go to buy it there considering how often winners bought tickets in Ohio.

Before Ohio had the MegaMillions Ohioans were winning PowerBall jackpots in Indiana and BigGame jackpots is Michigan.  It's not where you play but what you play that make you a winner.

What does everyone think, Quick Picks or pick your own #'s

Just the type of media the lottery wants, should bring in lots more sales. There seems to be a trend with record jackpots now. The match 6 is also the highest it has ever been. I wonder if the powerball will follow?

Flew back from NY Sunday and couldn't find a place that sold lottery tickets that morning What? Hopefully it won't hit on Tuesday and roll over so that I can take a little drive to Georgia so that I too an participate with the rest of you Smiley

From what I have read, most of the previous winners had chosen Quick Picks. I am sure there are many here that choose their own numbers but I just let the computer pick mine out.

People who pick their own numbers don't really care what everyone else thinks.

Really? Where in NY did you stay? I always comment when I go to CT to play powerball that there are so many more places to play lotto in NY than in CT. I live 10 minutes outside NYC and there are lotto retailers every 10 feet. Would you consider playing online? I don't even know how I feel about that, but it's just a thought.

Idon't know where in NY you were, but even in suburban areas you usually only need to walk a short distance to the first deli or gas station that's also a convenience store, and they pretty much all have the official NY lottery sign in one of the windows. In West Virginia it seems like most lottery retailers have the offical WV powerball sign out front where it's very easy to see. When I'm in Kentucky it seems like the only way to find a retailer is to walk inside and ask or look for the machine. It's almost as if some places don't want you to know they sell lottery tickets.

I agree.  New Yorkers love their lottery.  There are also many retailers in CT, it just helps to be a local so you know where they're at.

"Mega Millions jackpot soars to $355 million for Tuesday's (3/6) drawing"

From the GA website today.

gatortom

I snuck off to Georgia Saturday afternoon and bought a couple hundred tickets.  We put 100 in an 10 way group pick (evenly split, lawyer chosen) & I am selling some for a buck or 2 extra for gas. If no one hits, I will go Wed as the line should be shorter. GL all!!!!!

I am sure it's much easier/cheaper to play online but I am one of those that feels much better having the ticket in my possession, even a 400 mile round trip to Georgia (from Orlando area) won't seem that bad if the jackpot rolls over $400 million Smiley
