I think polls like this are popping up all over the LP forum because members are realizing that they aren't likely to win a jackpot and their best chance of getting their hands on even a potion of a lottery jackpot is for someone else to give it to them but things don't work that way, even friends or relatives who win a lottery jackpot aren't likely to share it with them and wishing it was so is not going to change it.
I play the lottery to win a jackpot for myself. Nothing irks me more when I'm buying tickets than a total stranger saying to me "You got the winner there? Remember me if you win." I'm thinking to myself that fool is jinxing me and I want to reply "I don't know you and don't plan to know you if I win." but I say nothing, pay for my tickets and leave.
I hear the same thing from time to time from store clerks"remember half of this is mine if you win". But funny thing is they never offer to pay half of the cost of the tickets.. LOL
Regarding the polls: yes, some of us have come to the realization that we might never win and those of us that are lucky enough to have close relatives might just be blessed with something from their win if they are so lucky. In my book that is not being greedy or wishful thinking, just a reality.

IF I ever won a jackpot, I'd probably buy the clerk that sold me the ticket a car or something, but then again, what if you buy them a car, they get in a crash, and someone gets killed ?. It can come back to you.
That St. Louis Cardinal pitcher that was drink and plowed into a tow truck and killed himself 2 months ago ? His family is suing the tow truck company AND the owner of the car that was stalled that the tow truck was there to help. 'The car was not kept up and would not have broken down if it had been in good condition'.
I will have to remember that the next time the computer that runs my car craps out as I drive down the road.
What if I donate to a kid's athletic baseball league, and a bat or ball flies out of a kids' hands and hits another kid and kills him ? They would come after me for 'sponsoring or purchasing 'inferior' equipment, or for not providng proper coaching, or something....
My point is, it's REALLY HARD to do something nice for somebody AND not somehow be held liable for it.

It's sad.
if you are worried about liability then just donate anonymously and no one will know who to sue if something goes wrong with your gift
