I would give him half the jackpot because I would not have won if it wasn't for him.

I would give them half, but not because I would feel legally or morally obligated to do so.

I voted give them 50%.  I'd make them co-claim if that's possible in the state the ticket was bought in.  If not, I'd take half of what's left after taxes for me, pay the 25% gift tax on the other half, and give them what's left.  Whaddya wanna bet that would cause big problems with many friendships, with the "friend" thinking they should get to take home the same amount as me.

I would do for them what I would expect had I had bought the ticket for them, a Thank You Note and maybe a nice meal too.

I voted 50%. I will sign the ticket first and have him sign it too. We will claim our price together. This is the only way I can live with myself. I want to have both: money and friend.Smile

I don't know anyone who would ever buy me a lottery ticket as a gift and I would never give one, so my answer is "it will never happen."

In FL 2 people can't sign one ticket and split the prize.   Some states will issue a check to more than one person, so it depends where you live.

I did: I was given a couple of $10 rub-offs: I was going to rub them off later, but the gift giver insisted I rub them off now. (they were both losers) I'm sure if one of them was a Winner the Gift giver would have expected half the prize money. When I stop and think about it: The gift giver got to play the Lottery and give a gift (not) all for the same $20. LOL!

A mind once stretched by a new idea never returns to its original dimensions!

Hypothetical - Instead of expecting half the prize, the giver had a change of heart and wanted all of it;  and worse, would claim you stole the ticket from him.Thud
