$ 5,000,000 is the minimum to be able to quit working for the rest of my life. I got 25 years left to work before retirement.

I answered that I would consider quiting my job if I won $50 million.  The reason for that amount is that I have been working for the last 40 years and really want to just sit back and do all the things that I have wanted to do in regards to travel and such that I have not been able to do in the last 40 years.

The desire to finally own my own home (and a second home in another country) so that I can split my time in between the two as I wish.  The $50 million would allow me to buy/build what I want and put aside college funds for my kids.  After investing a large portion of the $50 M, I will have the freedom to live well off the interest on the funds that are in the bank/investments.

I shudder with excitement at the thought of being able to wake up in the morning and look at the wife and being able to say - "Honey, I feel like going to the beach today" and then being able to just call and get a flight to the Bahama's or whereever I want to relax.  Call me a spend thrift, but having the means to do this on a whim would be wonderful.

Being that I am over 50, the remainder of the money would be left for my family so that they can live comfortably.

i ticked 1 mill, my new job would be stopping my missus from thinking we're rich and spending it all on extravagant excess , forcing us back to the gringstone of work.  of course a $1 MILL WIN HERE IN OZ IS DIFFERENT THAN IN USA,  1 mill is 1 mill, cash and lumpsum, no tax, id have to say a $5 mill win if in usa, as after lum and tax, it'd prob be about $1 mill.

      so

       oz win = $1 mill

       usa  win = $5 mill

I went to the store this evening to buy lottery tickets and the young man behind the counter asked me how much would I give him if I won? I told him I wouldn't give him anything the lottery corporation would for him being a seller. He was pretty ignorant!

LOL Joking maybe but playing along can be dangerous if you actually win!

The Guy was actually smart and instead took you for an ignorant. He must say this to everyone and when someone will win something, he must then tell them... well you won something, how much do you give me?.. the ignorants feel bad and give him a small part of it. This guy collects from all winners. He is simply a greedy full of it con artist.

It's not like you're going to give the guy your name, or that you ever have to go to where you purchased your winning ticket again. I wouldn't do either.  I would just smile when a sales clerk says that. Fortuneately they never have.

I am glad this poll got so many responses. It is my first poll.  Thank you!

My own response was "never - managing my investments is my new job".  Sure, I will have advisors, but I will go back to school and learn as much about investing as I can. I don't want to be one of "those" statistics.  To me, $5m is a very comfortable early retirement - in a few more years. I think it would have to be $40m or $50m before I quit my day job because I enjoy it very much - I work with great people, get 3 wks pd vacation + 12 pd holidays, and the pay is fair.  Keep in mind, too, that for a $30m jackpot, after the cash option and taxes, you are going to pocket maybe a tad over $10m.  That's enough for a very luxurious retirement - in a few years, and to live comfortably now. LOL, I have champaign tastes and expensive hobbies (show horses). Blue Angel

Consider your answer as if you take the cash payout (assume 60% of the jackpot), regardless of what taxes you pay or avoid.

Explain what factors lead you to this choice - your age, family considerations, etc.

                      Have fun!

I've quit jobs for much much less! I once got a bonus of $5,000 and i was like 'sayonara suckers!' lived on that for a good seven months ... then back to looking for jobs! so basically, if you flash a couple of benjamins in my face, i can't promise you that i'm not quiting tomorrow - i'm more of that 'live for today for tomorrow you may be audited', type of chic

but what about all the people that can't afford medical coverage? the self employed? I know how it feels to be terrified every headache would be a brain tumor or every stomach ache would be cancer and I would die young because no one would treat me because I don't have insurance.  Plus that, ever seen Sicko?? I would be glad to pay extra taxes...

Pay the extra taxes and get nothing for it. You can't throw tax money at a problem and imagine it solved.  That has never worked and will never work.  Have you ever noticed that, in all these countries, with so called medical freebess, there are never wheel chairs on the streets?  Never have handicap parking?  Never have vans for transportation?  It is because those who are handicaped are left with zero resources.  Loose a leg to diabeties, which most people have diabeties. Have a parent loose a leg because of a work accident. See how much you will love the free medical concept! You could wait years for an artifical limb; which will probably be a used one.

America works because America works.  When you stop achieving, and expect your next door neighbor to pay your way, because some one has to pay, it is not free, the country you love will no longer exist!

When you and your neighbor start paying for all the free medical care the useless will soon demand, then you will begin following the rules currently being drafted in England.  They are going to determine what you can eat and how much you can weigh, and what kind of physical exercise program you must participate in. Violate the rukles and you loose your benfits. Sounds like Communist China?  This all effects your health and they are paying for your health maintenance, thus they control the money - he who controls the money makes the rules.  Ready for that?  Better be!  Once you place a government official in charge of your life, your life will never be the same.

People in England spend hours in ambulances, because of the line into the hospital.  There is a rukle in England that once you enter the hospital, you must be takencare of within a specified amount of time; I think it is four hours.  So they make you wait outside until they can comply with the law. Those needing legs or arms wait years for a cheap replacement, sometime never getting them.  People in Canada drive acroos the border every day and pay for superior care - because it is not available in Canada.  The leaders and rich in other country's come here for health care, because it is useless in a free health care society.

Our medical advantage is the result of one thing - profits to the investors  Your food is superior because the growers make a profit.  The cars are superior because the company makes a profit. The medicine is superior because the drug company's make a profit. Take that away and you will soon run out of inovation.  Why try to be the best in your field when everything you make will be taken away from you.  Let some one cut your salary by 50% and see how dedicated you will be. Reduce a Nurses salary by 50% and see if you want her passing our your medicine!

History has proven, raising taxes to turn a business over to the government is a glory idea and a useless effort.  They all go broke, and taxes keep gong up.  The more freebees in life, the longer the line for the freebies. Those who are takers don't care who pays for the items they get, it is free to them.  If the number can increase it will.  Medicare, Social Security, and Welfare are all great concepts and all are failures. If we are running out of money to support the current entitlements, and have to raise the taxes to pay for them, imagine how much more the price will be when every single person who wants it, can get it free.  The are supposedly 40 million illegal aliens in this country.  Lets make then legal and gibe themm free access to every thig they want.  That plus the millions who now scrounge everything they can and you will be number 12 million, four hundred thousand in line for your dental appointment!

The select pay and the masses grab as much as they can.  A retired person can't get into a Social Security office because of the number of 20 and 30 years olds applying for disability. Great concept, failed implementation. Nothing is free, unless your are a member of the U.S. Congress.

You made some very good and valid points as it pertains to healthcare which I totally agree with.  I just hope that neither Democratic candidate gets elected as they seem hell bent on adding another entitlement program to the mix (that certainly seems to be a Democratic party legacy).  I don't think many liberal Americans realize the failures of socialistic programs...or perhaps they are just insane thinking they will obtain a different result following the same processes and procedures others who have failed implemented before.  Anyway, I highlighted the paragraph here because you had me going until you made the statement about our car manufacturers...I can't say that our American produced cars are superior to European and Asian cars as I do not know anyone who lusts after a Ford F-150 or a Chevy (name your model), but I do know many people who drool over a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Maserati, Lexus, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes...all of which are foreign cars.  But yes, they are produced with a profit motive.  So Russian built cars do not qualify.

Get MONEY!!! Winning a JACKPOT lottery is all the HOPE and CHANGE I desire!!!  NOW give me MONEY!US Flag

The guy who won the presidency in 2008 really won the lottery...he is now millions richer, travels in first class style, and even has a staff that would be the envy of the richest Powerball winner (she has a staff of 2). Every night he goes to sleep, he probably plays the close of Dave Chappelle's Show: I'm rich beyatch!
