  For me it's all of the above.  But I really enjoy the "what if" part though.  As soon as I buy my ticket, it starts.  What if this is the winning ticket?  What if I was the sole winner?  What would I do first?  Where would I travel?  How long before I quit my job?  Weeks or hours .    To know if I didn't want to, I wouldn't have to work another day in my life.  To have that financial security to know I was debt free and if I wanted something I could buy it (within reason).  To take care of my family.  To be able to buy that expensive car.  I play the lottery for all of those reasons.  Why do you?

  Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.

  Are you referring to Pick 3 / Pick 4?

  That's what I figured, but I had to ask: When someone says Lottery: I think of Pick 3 / Pick 4.

  I'm surprised to see that, so far, a quarter of the votes chose the option "To see if I could beat the odds" as their reason for playing.  Very interesting...

  Not surprised, however, that a majority, including myself, chose "All of the above".

  just to be rich and buy everything that i love - which happens to be all expensive .. me being the only one in 298billion isn't a factor in playing .. i just need to be the ONLY one in 298billion to win that week ..

  Being a very material guy, I voted "Buy expensive things". I also do it to try to beat the odds of course.

  I think most pick-3 and 4 players not only enjoy the "what if" part but have actually experienced the "cashing a winning ticket" part and the next time they buy a ticket they know it's a real possibility. Multi-million dollar jackpot games that could provide financial security have been around for over 20 years and most of those players have never experienced cashing the winning ticket.

  Having those "what if" moments is a good reason for playing the huge jackpot games for over 20 years but its included in "all the above".  The affect of beating the odds would be financial security and vice-versa. Even by checking "other" the affect will always be "all the above" so no real conclusion can be gained from your poll.
