Raven,  I have to say .... what a clean, clear ....thought pattern you always demonstrate in your post.   Refreshing

It's a familiar persona you have ......but I can't quit put my finger on it.   At any rate ...thanks .... I enjoy your insightful perspectives all the time.   Do more ...and more often       Are you actually from New Jersey ......orginally?  kidding ...  LOL

What can I tell You?

In the IT World: where System Availability is King: and System Outages are Not you'll find many, many Data Centers that Plan for Power Outages by Investing in a UPS: To Maximize Uptime and Minimize Downtime.

Thanks TODD ......................... OLG got me  ; )

When I was trying to google LP I found  Alexa.com and the facts there were amazing. I am proud be a member of LP.

      thx again TODD.

I googled LP also and found Alexa.com.  I started surfing those other sites listed.  One of them was partially interesting.  I also found some highly suspect ones.

A huge Data Center without a UPS: Sounds like a Train Wreck waiting to happen.

              UPS=Uninterruptable Power Source

Oh my gosh Raven, of course the data center has a UPS system!  There are several tiers of UPS systems, in fact.

I don't really take these kinds of things personally, but geez, do you think I'm on the junior varsity team or something? What?

I'm guessing you don't follow events in the technology industry, because if you did you'd know that even computer giants like Google with multi-billion-dollar IT budgets have outages occasionally.  The entire Google mail system went offline recently for several hours.  Maybe you should write to Google and tell them to stock a few spare routers because they malfunction occasionally.

Outages are a fact of life in IT, and you try to minimize such outages, but they can never truly be eliminated completely.

I googled LP also and found Alexa.com.  I started surfing those other sites listed.  One of them was partially interesting.  I also found some highly suspect ones.

I actually find Alexa to be very poor.  There are much better services out there, but unfortunately Alexa still gets attention because it was the first of its kind several years ago.

For example, Alexa currently has Lottery Post ranked #17,698, based on whatever internal estaimtes they use.

However, Lottery Post is actually currently ranked #3,318 out of all sites on the Internet.  (The ranking is adjusted every day, so it's actually been lower than that at times.)  That's based on actual metered visitors, not an estimate.

The problem with Alexa is that the stats are based on a more narrow cross-section of Internet users, and very little reliance upon actual metered numbers.  Also, they do a horrible job of tracking return visits and separating unqiue sessions.  No serious webmaster that I know of relies on Alexa for their stats.

Lottery Post has three metered sources: Its own internal system that reads statistics directly from the server logs, Google Analytics, and QuantCast.  This triple-redundant metering can provide confindence in the results, and can objectively exclude statistical outliers like Alexa.

It wasn't funny Todd - I have people from my town that email me about the site being down - I told them they were flagged.  ROFL!!  Good thing they know me as a Joker!  :-).   I gave the LP addie to a few good people in my area.

There was a huge storm passing over the country for the past few days and its not over yet, so expect your servers to act up.

Thank You for the explaination Todd!

Sorry for the downtime Wednesday evening.

I just wanted to explain that the downtime was caused by a wide-ranging power issue within the data center in which the Lottery Post server operates.  (The data center is a huge complex that houses thousands of servers and perhaps hundreds of thousands of web sites.)

When that kind of thing happens, it is beyond my control and the only thing I can do is wait ... like the rest of you ... for it to be restored.

Well!!  i was at work yesterday evening so i didn't get to experience the outtage.

But its good to have LP up and going.

                    Thanks Todd!!

For every action, there's a reaction :-Cheers

I saw a message saying "Time out".

I know my laptop does overtime occasionally, but this was the first time I thought the computer was telling me it needed a break.

So I shut the computer off and restarted it 1 hour later. But even then it was still tired.

From this point on, I only use my computer in 1 hour increments, with 3 hour rests in between just in case. I really don't want to see that message again.

Too bad you weren't eating a fortune cookie. It could have possibly warned you not to eat wonton soup while reading my comment on the LP.

This is why everyone should read the fortune cookie first.
