2 lottery tickets split $333M Mega Millions jackpot

Mega Millions

There will be no worldwide lottery jackpot record this time.

Two tickets have split last night's $333 million Mega Millions jackpot, one on each coast of the United States.

The winning tickets, which are now worth an estimated $166.5 million each, were purchased in San Gabriel, Calif., and the Bronx, New York.

The winning numbers were: 1, 17, 31, 37 and 54 with the Mega Ball 31.  The Texas Megaplier was 4.

Also, 34 lucky players came very close to winning it all, macthing the first 5 numbers for a $250,000 prize: 6 from California, 3 from Georgia, 1 from Illinois, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Massachusetts, 2 from Michigan, 6 from New Jersey, 7 from New York, 2 from Ohio, 4 from Texas, and 1 from Washington.

The six California second-prize tickets will receive $220,778 each, because California's pari-mutuel payout system splits the available prize money by the number of winners.  The fewer winners, the greater the prize.

210 players matched four of five numbers plus the Mega Ball to net a prize of $10,000.  22 of those third-prize winners were from California and will take home $16,421 each.

The jackpot for the next Mega Millions drawing, on Tuesday night, resets to $12 million.

According to Lottoreport New York bought the most tickets at $28,732,216 but California was a close second with $24,084,874 in sales.  New Jersey was third with $19,576,676 in sales.  These states were responsible for almost half of the $156M in MegaMillions ticket sales and they were only 3 of the 12 states selling tickets..

2+0 this drawing....I guess I'm getting better (17 & 54).

I have family in the Bronx....hope it was one of them. Then again, I'd be one of those who haven't spoken to them in years....I'd probably just leave them alone.

Congratulations to all, and hopefully we'll (I'll) win the next one.

I read on some website from New York that that person decided to take the annuity. How is it possible that they know even though the lottery office is closed until Monday?

LckyLary

We passed about 6 blocks from the NY location coming back from a Yankee game Weds. night.

The NY site lists the number of winners and where sold. the nj site need to do that...they only
put that information weeks later when a jackpot was won at a particular Store.

I predict there will be a jackpot winner again within 2 drawings. The bonus ball is predicted to be "10".

"Incredible," was the first word out of my mouth when I logged on to the NYLottery website this morning
The moment I saw the words '38 W. Fordham Rd" I knew the ticket was sold right around the block from where my cousin lives. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't play haha.
I'm just glad the winning ticket wasn't purchase where I bought my tickets (or anywhere else near me, for that matter)I would probably go insane haha.
I was reading the NY Times article this morning and laughed, with a mixture of pity and empathy, at one of the reactions to the win.

Tubar Palmer, 43, a neighborhood resident who is a regular at theconvenience store in the Bronx, came in to check if he was the winner.
“Why?” he shouted, reading aloud the winning numbers, “Why not me?”

Why not me, Tubar? Or anyone else on this message board? Haha.
It's always a bummer to lose, but I'm actually glad someone from NYC won again, and that they, like me, could possibly be hispanic.
Winning has nothing to do with race or nationality, but there's a certain pride that extends beyond the winner just being from New York.
I imagine a family just like mine, and how incredible their lives have just changed.
Bless 'em and good luck on tuesday/future drawings everyone.

Also, in Texas, if you don't choose at the time of purchase, you are automatically assigned the annuity choice.   That's for the jackpot only.

You went all the way out of your way just to go to that store? I would imagine the BX is a bit of a ways from BK, not to mention those ridiculous tolls one pays to travel from borough to borough. Tell me you were going to a Yankee game or something?! LMAO. I'm on the Jersey side of the Hudson, and getting to the Bronx is no problem for me, heck I even have family there. But I wouldn't waste my gas going to a store that sold the winning ticket to some guy/woman you don't even know.

I was telling my dad maybe his sister won.....I wonder if he called...lol.

In Ohio agents(retailers) selling the winning tickets for a MegaMillions Jackpot get $1,000 per Million*.  Each state have their own rules.  A few years ago a BigGame jackpot was shared by winners in Michigan and Illinois and the retailer in Michigan got $10K while the one in Illinois got $150K.

* Shared among all winning ticket selling agents, minimum bonus of $10,000.

Why should the retailer get anything at all? They already got paid for selling the winning ticket, as well as every other ticket they sold. Did selling the winning ticket take some kind of extra work?

Retailer incentives are a huge boost to lottery sales.  I know this because I know several owners of convenience stores that do whatever they can to increase awareness of jackpots, etc.

If you truly want to gain understanding of why things happen the way they do with the lottery, you need to think of it as the huge business that it is -- not as just a challenging game between you and the rubber balls.

That is correct.  Lottery retailers signed on to sell lottery tickets and knew full well what they would receive, should they sell a jackpot winning ticket.

If MI was to give the retailer some kind of extra "bonus" that is not in the contract, that would be like the retailer or the lottery commision deciding to give you some kind of extra bonus for a jackpot win.  It just isn't done.

Besides, where would they take the extra money from?  Maybe their paychecks?  Maybe off the winning jackpot?  In either case, if they did do that, someone would be unhappy.

Are those retailers trying to increase jackpot awareness because they're hoping to collect a bonus for selling a jackpot winner, or do they do it because it sells more of the tickets for which they get the standard commission?  Obviously the retailers have a much better chance of selling a jackpot winner than any given player has of buying the winner, but I sure hope that collecting the bonus isn't part of their business plan. I'd be very surprised if annual bonus payments to retailers average out to more than a couple of hundred bucks per retailer. Some retailers made that much simply on the increased ticket sales for the last MM drawing.

I am thinking of it as a business. That's why I don't think it'snecessary for the retailers to become part of the game of chance. The retailers earn a modest commission on every ticket sold, and they also collect a modest amount for redeeming prizes. If they do happen to sell a big prize winner, they usually benefit substantially from the publicity and an increase in ticket sales to players who decide it's a lucky place to buy tickets, and anything else they pick up at the same time.

Retailer Bonus Structure (OHIO)

5.5% on every sale and up to an additional 1.5% based on how many winning tickets they cash; Jackpot selling bonus is $1,000 for every million of the jackpot.

Retailer Bonus Structure (NEW YORK)

6% sales commission on any New York Lottery ticket; $10,000 bonus for selling a jackpot-winning MM ticket.

Retailer Bonus Structure (TEXAS)

Sales commission is 5%; Mega Millions bonus is 1% of advertised jackpot portion won, capped at a total of $1,000,000 for all bonuses paid for a single drawing. Bonus is pari-mutuel. If multiple jackpot winning tickets are sold, retailers will share the bonus equally.

Retailer Bonus Structure  (CALIFORNIA)

6¢ selling bonus; 1/2 of 1¢ bonus for selling a Mega Millions jackpot
