Not me. I'll take the money.

So what if I know what the capital of bum effen Egypt is?

I'd rather be rich than smart. You don't need a whole lot of brains to cruise on a 300 foot yacht with a harem of 20 year old beauties at your feet.

Besides, I already know what the capital of Egypt is. Cairo. There !.... Now....... can I have the money?

Guys...seriously, there are some jobs that requires years of training and on-the-job experience. Some people will kill to aqcuire such level of high educations with a push of a button.

One guy summed up pretty nicely. Yeah, just like the movie Matrix downloaing knowledge in your brain will become reality in a couple of centuries. (of course it might cost ya) People can save a tremendous amount of money and time to become an expert in their field. Of course, they will have to be SUITABLE candidates first.

I don't know about you guys, but if I have the level of artistic skill I want, I can forget about winning millions in Lottery.

I hope this is not an off-topic thread.

I was wondering if it's possible to 'download' education and experience to the human brain. If this becomes possible then this will cause major chaos in the job market. Still, it can be really helpful if there's a demand for highly trained specialists. They can find the suitable candidates and inject the knowledge and experiences.

Now, here comes the lottery-related question. What if the PRIZE FOR A LOTTERY GAME IS DOWNLOADING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE INSTEAD OF MONEY? Will people flock into this kind of lottery game?

There was a short story about that where in the distant future people simply had their skills downloaded into their minds.   The protagonist was singled out as a child on reading day because tests showed that he was abnormal and sent to a special school where he had to learn everything the hard way and he felt that it was a school for the retarded.   At one point he escaped and went as a spectator to a job olympics where people competed for the best jobs and saw one of his childhood friends fail miserably, he approached his friend who said that it just wasn't fair that they were from a distant rural planet and did not have the latest career skills tapes to be downloaded on career day for the new machines, he asked his friend why he couldn't just keep up with the journals on what the new technology was and adapt as they came up but his friend was dumbfounded at such a question.   At this time, teachers from the special school who had been following him since the escape revealed to him that the special school was really for the most elite in society, those who were able to innovate and create knowledge rather just have it downloaded and that was why he had to learn the hard way.

The story was quite dated as it used the concepts of tapes to hold the downloadable skills and had the concept of physical distribution of these tapes to the various worlds but the concept is still very futuristic but a smidgen closer to reality then it once was.

I'd like the Ninja skills download please and none of that Dollhouse tabla rosa wipes stuff.

Great, thanks. I love your post. But...

No one said that a person can't DL the knowledge and gain the experience old way at the same time.

I think the way that short story put it was that he had to learn how to learn and that was more important than what he learned.    It probably wasn't in so many words, probably more along the lines of the people who just received their knowledge and skills via the download simply could no longer imagine learning any other way hence it was necessary to identify the most promising candidates in a population and train them old school in order to still have a core of scholars able to push progress ahead.

I think I read the short story in a junior high language arts class but I can't remember the author.   Now it's going to bug me and I'll bet download is not a good keyword to google on.

The way things are going the lottery of the future could very well be for food. we have a scratch off game here that offers gasoline.

"we have a scratch off game here that offers gasoline."

Sully are you making a joke or does your state really have a gasoline scratcher?  I wouldnt mind  playing that game.  That would be cool.  I was watching a  TLC " Lottery changed..." that actually had  win Red Sox tickets for life.  That seemed like crap to me but I guess that was the hot ticket.  The winner actually said it was better than winning 10 million dollars.  Go figure, talk about  to each his own

What are the odds for that gas lotto? What are the prizes? Is it gas for life or just a full tank? I personally wouldn't play unless you always get back what you paid for the scratcher. But that would just defeat the purpose.

There are a lot of things that I want to do well at but as a lottery prize, give me the money. Lol.

I do believe I've seen you (ambelamba) post before about not being happy with 'where you're at'...

                    with your ability.

Download...for winning? Nah, give me the cash too. I'd rather work at getting where I want to be.

If I'm not good enough, most of the reward will come from working at it and adapting to get good

                    enough...or darn close.

You must have me confused with someone else.   I'm not the one that started the downloadable skills thread nor have I posted about skills before or about being not happy.   I was simply commenting on how the downloadable skills thread reminded me of a sci-fi short story that we studied in junior high.

The prize that I would want is the annual payments provided that the annual payments are greater than my current salary and hopefully greater by a factor of two or three.   If one wins a large jackpot, you would want to invest most of it and an annuity is a tax deferred investment.   With millions, it's actually hard to find good investments and I wouldn't want to be pressed into selecting poor investments right away, with the annual payments, I could take advantage of dollar cost averaging as the money comes in.

As to working for it, winning a lottery is by definition not working for it so clearly it's not about working to be where you want to be but working for it once you've been lifted by the lottery to where you want to be.   I would say that there's clearly enjoyment from a job well done and that enjoyment is better when there are no worries or insecurities and hence better enjoyed once you're on a firm standing.   Don't confuse that with moralistic high ground of saying you'd rather work at getting where you want to be.   If you're playing the lottery, you're hoping for a short cut plain and simple.

I do not have you confused with someone else...that is why I wrote *you* referring to the OP and also cut and pasted that original posters

name right behind the word *you* in parenthesis.....how'd you misread that?

The main theme of the thread is:

Download education or win money. We are not talking (you are) about lottery skills so there was no need for your comment about working on that.

That's off somewhere on cloud 9.

I don't know where you're coming from or why you thought I was doing anything other than highlighting a very good point in what YOU - jwhou -

                        wrote.

Read it again if you want, if you don't...it doesn't matter. Obviously, you saw something I did not mean and wasn't referring to you with what I

                        said.

Keep the main theme in mind: A PRIZE OF EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE OR MONEY

Would you like the money or would you like a download of skills?

So, where did you get the idea that what I said had anything to do with working on winning a LOTTERY?

In the hypothetical example....the lottery was already won....now we have to choose a prize.

Education and experience is something I would want to WORK at....not have *installed* or downloaded as a prize in a lottery.

Give me the money.....The satisfaction and REWARD come from experiencing, learning, being educated, by doing it myself....not having it instantly

put there for me by download.

As for moralistic high ground....try it sometime, you might like it. But since that's an off topic conversation that makes no sense here....it does not

apply to what the main bulk of posters are talking about...(sans jwhou)....: Choosing a prize in a lottery of EDUCATION OR MOOLAH.

Give me the moolah, I'll get the education and experience for job, hobby or any of life's desires by working for it myself.

                        Get it now?

apply to what the main bulk of posters are talking about...(sans jwhou)....: Choosing a prize in a lottery of EDUCATION OR MOOLAH.

Give me the moolah, I'll get the education and experience for job, hobby or any of life's desires by working for it myself.

                          Get it now?

I did see the parenthesis to Ambelamba but you did post as a reply to my post and the "you" is definitely second tense regardless of parenthesis.   All the parenthesis did is suggest that there was a mistake in whose post you may have thought you were posting to.   A simple parenthesis does not change who you are addressing and you need to change who you are addressing before using the pronoun "you". You can see how by replying to my post but addressing Ambelamba can cause some concern as to misrepresenting my nature particularly when you're post appears to be derogatory.

I agree with you that the money is more pertinent but I would add that experience and learning is something that is happening all the time and much of the satisfaction is in the process of learning and experiencing what's to be experienced, gaining skills immediately may be convenient but not always desirable.   Getting rid of financial problems immediately, that's a different matter.

Enlighten me. What does Insta-Learning has anything to do with socialism?

I believe it would take away your drive, ambition, rugged individualism and impetus to excel just like socialism does.

Downloadable knowledge and/or experience would kill the human spirit just as socialism does.

Remember the Mid-90's TV show "Sliders"?  They had an episode about "Future Lottery".  You go to an ATM and type in what ever amount of money you want and it'll give it to you.  The higher the amount, the more Lottery tickets you "earn".   If you win the lottery, you get millions of dollars plus execution.
