First-ever Powerball win in Michigan

$128.6 million Powerball win comes just one week after $140 million Mega Millions jackpot won in same state

By Todd Northrop

The USA's two biggest multi-state lottery games produced $100 million+ jackpot winners within the same week — both in the state of Michigan.

Mega Millions was the first to turn out a grand prize winner.  On Oct. 29, one lucky ticket sold in Michigan's Upper Peninsula region matched the first five numbers plus the Mega Ball number to win it all.

The jackpot was worth $140 million, or $94.3 million if awarded as one lump-sum cash payment.  Both amounts are before taxes are withheld.

The winning numbers for the Oct. 29 Mega Millions drawing were 4, 19, 26, 28, and 39, with Mega number 14.

Then last night, about a week after the big Mega Millions jackpot, one Powerball lottery ticket sold in Michigan matched the first five numbers plus the Powerball number to win a massive $128.6 million jackpot.  (The estimated jackpot prior to the drawing was $123 million.)  If taken as a lump-sum cash payout, the amount is $70 Million, before taxes.

It is the first time a jackpot-winning Powerball ticket has been sold in the state of Michigan since the game went on sale in the state on Jan. 31, 2010.

The winning ticket was sold at the Uptown Book Store, 16541 Woodward Ave., in Highland Park.

The winning Powerball numbers were 7, 12, 23, 34, and 38, with Powerball number 33.  The Power Play multiplier was 4.

The Power Play, a $1 optional purchase on top of the regular $1 Powerball ticket price, multiplies all non-jackpot prizes by up to 5 times.  But if a player matches the first five numbers, they automatically get their prize upgraded to $1 million, regardless of the Power Play number selected.

In addition to the big Powerball jackpot winner Saturday night, another 11 players will receive a second-prize payout for matching the first five numbers, but not the Powerball number:  3 from Arizona, 1 from Florida, 1 from Indiana, 1 from Missouri, 1 from New York, 2 from South Carolina, 1 from Virginia, and 1 from Washington, D.C.  One of the South Carolina players purchased the Power Play option, automatically increasing their payout to $1 million.

For the complete rundown of all Powerball and Mega Millions game and drawing information players are directed to USA Mega (www.usamega.com), the Web site dedicated to the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games.

Is the lottery distributing our playing money to certain state demography areas. I SENT $5 QUICK PICK TO A LOCAL DEMOGRAPHY AREA IN MICHIGAN.I  wonder if it was a wealthy neighborhood, a middle class neighborhood or a poor neighborhood that won the jackpot in michigan. IN NEW YORK  I DO NOT SEE TOO MANY POOR NEIGHBORHOODS WINNING THE BIG LOTTERY PRIZES.

MAYBE THAT IS WHY THEY CALL THE LOTTERY A TAX ON THE POOR.(OH, I'M JUST JOKING TOO)

What if it is the same person............Probably no way to calculate the odds on that happening...

Sold in a bookstore, hmm...

I love bookstores, bookstores are some of my favorite places.

I've never seen one sell lottery tickets though.

I wish they'd sell tickets in a bookstore around me.

First, they'd have to build a bookstore though.

Actually, it'd be nice to have a bookstore/liquor store combination.

So I wouldn't have to drive 35 miles to get a dadgum bottle of whiskey!

I'm glad to see that they sell lottery tickets in a book store.  Maybe it will encourage more people to read books.  With all the TV-based entertainment these days, not enough people read.

You got that right, Todd. Every time I see young people in a bookstore, they're in the magazine section or books about video games and such.

I love books though and read a lot. I just hope this new kindle type stuff doesn't kill the book business and bookstores.

Winner hits jackpot at adult bookstore.

I was going to play Powerball but I forgot. Then I was like someone from Michigan will hit Powerball and maybe they post on here. I was right someone did hit jackpot in Michigan and it was first time.

If the person who hit Powerball and Mega Millions in Michigan. Should team up and give some money to help out Michigan. Like 1 millions each.

What would that amount to, about 50¢ per person?  Most people could give themselves more than that by giving up playing the lotteries for one day.

I'm always amazed at the places that sale lottery tickets. I've yet to ever find a place other than a gas station (major ones, minus Flying J) that sales any kind of lottery ticket but on stories I've read delis, liquor stores, bars, grocery stores, restaurants and now a book store (if we can call those books) were all home to winners. If I ever find one of those places that sells PB/MM tickets I'm getting some, maybe it'll bring some luck. I do believe the grocery stores I go to sell scratch-offs from a machine, but that's it.

We need some more Texas winners (particularly in my area), in almost 3 years we've had 2 MM winners and I'm not sure about the PB (on their site I didn't see a Texas winner listed).

We got a lil Mom and Pops bookstore close to my house.

Twice they sold the winning Powerball tickets here in PA (over a 15 year period). Now what are the odds of a lil pop shop handing those out ? Not like they have a line of players.....Will say this though....90% of the time when I go there I either break even from a ticket or win more then I played....so there is something about this lil reading store.

And yes Kids read, they use IPADS and electrionic reading which is quicker downloads....Something wonderful though in turning pages in a book and being consumed by the authors tales!

I do have my weird suspcions on Michigan hitting twice....Since PA entered the MegaMillions we have yet to see a jackpot in our state...we are on a major dry spell...

Will say this though, Mega has better cash back to the winners then PB....

Congrats to the winners and the state of Michigan!! But wouldn't it be hilarious if both the tickets were won by the same person/family? lol. Now that would be extra great!

Well, then I'm definitely done buying anymore lottery in Michigan ! cause theres NO way it will produce anymore jackpot winners anytime soon- theres too many other states. I 'll have my friends in New York buy them there for me !.

I think Michigan, Ohio, New York, and California tend to have the highest hit rate among Mega Millions winners. Then again, there's nothing else to do in Michigan, Ohio, and New York this time of year because it's so dang cold!

Oh, please! I live in Illinois, it's gets very cold, but people rarely hit the jackpot here! Hell, we just got PB this year or last year, and no one has hit it yet!

i live in Wisconsin, and it's been pretty dry up here, especially in Southeastern Wisconsin. No Big Winners of any kind Power-Ball or Mega-Millions. Before they added all these other States and it was still the orignal multi-state and Wisconsin joined before they changed names, we had some Big Winners but then they started added states and the  our winning streak went down to now hardly nothing. We haven't had a Mega-Millions winner since the cross sales either.

I had asked the Lottery Comm. why does one state seem to win more than another, they responded that it's based on the number of ticket sales in the state and areas in the state.  I can't believe that a place that's so poor, that they can afford to buy that many lottery tickets over some major cities in other areas.

I think the last MM winner here was in 2002, it was 163 miilion, but two people won. One in Illinois, and the other was in New Jeresy. The Shell gas station where the winning ticket was purchased is right up the street from where I live! But my family didn't even play MMs back then. No PB winners yet!
