Prince William was married in the uniform of the Irish Guards and is their Colonel in Chief.

It will be the first time the royal couple have visited the regiment since they were married.

The guards were formed in 1900 in recognition of the actions of Irish regiments in the Boer War.

        • FILE -- Britain's Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge arrive at a charity event for Absolute Return for Kids, ARK, in London, in this Thursday, June, 9, 2011 file photo. It sounds like a bit of a racket: $4000 for a three-course meal and a chance to see a polo match up close, or $400 for a box lunch and a chance to see the same match from the more distant bleachers. It gets better, however, when you throw in a chance to rub shoulders with the Duke and Duchess of Cambride, especially in southern California, where bragging about having a glass of wine with Prince William and the former Kate Middleton may just be worth the price of a used compact car or a week's vacation. That's what the organizers of a July 9 charity event at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club are hoping for. The glitzy royal couple makes a guest appearance there at the tail end of a ten-day trip to Canada and southern California that begins Thursday June 30, 2011, that marks their first overseas trip as man and wife, and the first test of their appeal on the international charity circuit.(AP Photo/Alastair Grant, file)

FILE -- Britain's Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and his wife Kate, Duchess …

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Prince William and Kate arrive in Canada on Thursday for their first official overseas trip since their wedding, in a visit that is expected to draw record-numbers of star-struck crowds and well-wishers hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa, open the Calgary Stampede and go canoeing in the Northwest Territories during their nine day-tour of their future realm before taking off to Los Angeles.

"I think given the youth and the dynamism of this couple they will simply continue to reaffirm the important role the crown plays in this country," said Kevin MacLeod, the Canadian secretary to Queen Elizabeth II and the chief organizer of the nine-day Canadian tour.

Canada's prime minister has even unveiled a personal flag for use during William's visit. It is the first flag to be created by Canada for a member of the royal family since 1962, when the queen adopted a personal flag for her own use in Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the flag was approved by the queen and William.

The young prince also plans to demonstrate his skills as a helicopter rescue pilot by taking part in a water landing demonstration, and the couple is scheduled to put on aprons and take part in a cooking workshop in Quebec City.

But the couple won't be welcomed by all. Some anti-royal protests are expected in the French-speaking province of Quebec, with small groups planning protests in Quebec City and Montreal.

The prince and Kate jet to Los Angeles on July 8 and will host a gala dinner there the next night to introduce up-and-coming British film talent to Hollywood executives.

The southern California trip includes a $4,000 three-course meal and a charity polo match up close with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they are formally known. So far, about 1,000 VIP tickets have been sold to the polo match along with about 400 general admission passes, raising nearly $4.4 million for the July 9 event. William plans to play in the match, and his wife will award the trophy to the winning team.

Decades have passed since Canadians abandoned the Union Jack and replaced "God Save the Queen" with "O Canada." Ordinarily, most Canadians are indifferent to the monarchy. However the 85-year-old Queen Elizabeth II — William's grandmother — remains Canada's titular head of state, is portrayed on its coins and stamps and has visited 22 times as queen.

This royal couple is expected to draw thousands. William got a reception fit for a rock star the last time he visited Canada as a 15-year-old in 1998. He wowed teen-age girls who wolf-whistled him when he visited Vancouver, British Columbia, with his father Prince Charles. William looked aghast at the commotion back then. That trip was the first official foreign visit for him since the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a car crash in Paris in August 1997.

William will be celebrating Canada's birthday on Friday, the same day his mother would have turned 50.

He is due to say a few words at a number of stops. Kate is not scheduled to speak.

The couple will travel from the sub-Arctic to oil-rich Calgary, Alberta, from busy Montreal to bucolic Prince Edward Island of "Anne of Green Gables" fame. They'll sit around a campfire with young people, dress casual for the Calgary rodeo, join a cookout in Quebec City and hand out flags to newly-minted Canadians at a citizenship ceremony.

Harper is the most pro-monarchy Canadian leader since the 1950s, and his ambition is to foster a national identity that is more conservative and more aware of its historical roots.

Prince William, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, watches the annual Calgary Stampede …

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Prince William and Kate launched the Calgary Stampede to wild cheering Friday, then headed for Los Angeles, having endeared themselves to Canadian crowds with a skillful mix of royal pomp and playful informality on their first official trip abroad since marrying.

The pair, sporting white cowboy hats, waved from their car at crowds of well-wishers lined 10 deep along the 2.8-mile (4.5-kilometer) parade route under sunny skies. They later joined hands and pushed a red button to launch the parade, one of the world's largest.

The Calgary Stampede is a 10-day exhibition and rodeo that celebrates the western Canadian way of life.

Canada is the first official overseas trip for the couple since their April 29 wedding, and the newlyweds were cheered almost everywhere they went. They celebrated Canada Day with hundreds of thousands on Parliament Hill, did an impromptu walkabout in Quebec City, raced in dragon boats on bucolic Prince Edward Island and went canoeing in the wilds of the Northwest Territories.

A much talked-about highlight was the race in Prince Edward Island when the prince's boat defeated Kate's. William's consoling hug and Kate's playful response — she shoved the prince as if to push him into the water — revealed their competitive, loving and fun side, and warmed Canadians' hearts.

"Both of them have charmed the people of Canada a great deal," said 60-year-old Linda Patton, who lives on Prince Edward Island.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left for Los Angeles for a weekend of events that include a polo match in Santa Barbara and a visit to Skid Row.

There was a moment Thursday that almost amounted to a faux pas — when the young prince and his bride appeared to snub their western Canadian host by not donning white cowboy hats upon arrival at airport, a time-honored Calgary tradition. But ruffled feathers were smoothed when the royal duo turned up for a rodeo show later in full western regalia, including the hats.

"Well, this is different," the prince said with a laugh as he touched the tip of his cowboy hat at a reception Thursday night. "We have been hugely struck by the diversity of this beautiful country: from Ottawa to Quebec; from Prince Edward Island to the Northwest Territories; and now the excitement of Calgary — and what about these fantastic white hats."

William said the nine-day trip to Canada exceeded expectations and promised to return.

The couple was decked out in western wear, with buttoned-down shirts and jeans. The prince opted for the same green checkered shirt that he wore Thursday in Calgary for a bull riding demonstration, and Kate wore a printed white long-sleeved blouse by Alice Temperley, said spokesman Miguel Head.

Kate later wore a red satin and wool scarlett Marianne coat-dress by Catherine Walker, with Queen Elizabeth II's Maple Leaf brooch, as they visited the Calgary Zoo and placed a wreath at a memorial to Canada's fallen soldiers in Afghanistan.

A Canadian military plane flies William and Kate to Los Angeles and will later take them back to Britain. The Canadian government declined to release the total cost of the couple's nine-day trip, but said it would be at least $1.5 million, not including security.

William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, is Canada's titular head of state. Carolyn Harris, a royal historian with Queen's University, said the royal couple's visit will likely ensure the monarchy remains the head of state in Canada for years to come.

"The degree of popularity that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoys really shows that the institution really has a popular and viable future in Canada," Harris said.

The couple were given the full red carpet treatment in Los Angeles

Britain's Prince William and Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, arrive at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club for The Foundation Polo Challenge in Carpinteria, California. William and his wife outshone even Hollywood's brightest stars, as Britain's future king lobbied for up-and-coming British actors in the home of the US film industry.

Prince William, Kate boost royal revenue

Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding has helped boost royal income from visits to Buckingham Palace and record sale of official souvenirs, a media report said.

The Royal Collection, which charges tourists for access to royal residences, including the palace, Windsor Castle and Clarence House, saw revenues rise from 7.3 million pounds to 41.7 million pounds, the 'Daily Express' reported.

The charitable trust's annual report for the 2010-11 financial year also revealed that visitor numbers were up four per cent to 2.1 million.

And, this was for all the royal buildings, including the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh - - British Queen's official residence in Scotland - - the Royal Mews, where the Monarch's carriages and state limousines are kept, and her art galleries, the newspaper said.

And sales in the royal gift shops were up 17.8 per cent, thanks partly to official wedding souvenirs, including a bone china range which raked in more than one million pounds.
