Simple: overall odds.

With scratchers, you have many more intermediate and smaller amounts to win besides the top prize. Overall odds are typically 1:4, and your percent return over time is around 60% or more.

With Daily 3, you only win straight or box, with the best odds 1:167, and your percent return over time is only around 50%.

So with scratchers, on your way to maybe hitting a top prize of $100,000 or $2,000,000, you are bleeding less cash. With Daily 3, you maybe get a $400-$600 pari-mutuel straight once every several hundred picks or so, along with some $40-$100 boxes.

It is a fact that scratchers have some of the best odds of any lotto game, and are the biggest game in revenue by far for the lotto, and they happen to have the least house edge. But some people don't like them because they can be addictive.

Did not mean to ruffle your feathers about pick 3. I play it sometimes, as I play all other lotto games as well. But I prefer Scratchers. To each his own.

You didn't ruffle my feathers!!  I do well with Pick 3 here in California.  I have never played scratchers.  To me, playing scratchers is like playing the slot machines in a casino.  I am saddened when I see these people sitting at a machine for hours on end feeding in their quarters.  Yes they get little payouts, but the Jackpot almost never.  Like you say, to each his own.

Good for you doing well with CA Daily 3! I suck at it...

Might be nice if they had other betting options like some other states like front pair or back pair, etc. The pari-mutuel thing we have, that can be a blessing or a curse? Was good for PA players today that they have fixed payout amounts instead of pari-mutuel, but bad for PA lotto commission, they must have lost millions on this draw.(and will they take it out elsewhere with poorer scratch cards in the future?)

As for scratchers, yeah, they can have a bad rap. I only buy a few when I go to the store to buy my other lotto tickets. I take them home, never play in store and never chase wins. I see something similar to slot junkies with some old guys and whinos standing around the liquor store kiosk scratching cards and saying "gimme another" over and over again.

Yes, scratchers are analagous to slots in casino games, which are poor at 10% house edge compared to other casino games with just a few percent house edge. But among lotto games, scratchers have the better odds. I actually came out ahead with casino last year, only because I hit $2000 jackpots on $2 slots a couple times. Lost on other casino games, but walked away a few grand ahead because of the slots. Go figure. As always, YMMV.

ok, I just need to vent a little. I understand lotteries are there to make a profit (business).

Lately, here in PA, they have been promoting the SURPRIZE second draw really hard  and of course I've been playing a little heavier in anticipation ( my mistake). ok, I get it, make a profit from all the hopefuls (no second draw so far), but come on at least give us a draw with some decent or normal numbers ( very strange pick3, look at the payouts, very low). they're making a killing on both fronts.

Instant scratchers, one word BLOWS, BLOWS,BLOWS,  ooops 3 words. I'm not wasting my $20 and $10 on losers. PA lottery needs to have a game that has many thousands of $500 jackpots instead of four $1m prizes. Spread the wealth with better odds.

      Millionaire Raffle, zilch.

      Good Luck All

Ha, Florida isn't much better.  I bought ten, dollar scratchers, one won a dollar and the only other winner won four prizes: $1.00, $4.00, $4.00, $1.00 for a total of $11.00 a profit of a dollar unless I count gas as the trip wasn't just for scratch tickets, can't live by beer and lotto tickets alone.

Anyway, don't buy a PA scratch ticket until you visit . . .

I like your idea about thousands of $500 winners instead of four $1 million prizes but I think we're in the minority.

I think most people like going for the big prizes.

And they gotta go with what will sell the best.

"I think most people like going for the big prizes." I Agree!

I'm for more prizes smaller payouts too. I Agree!

Saw this today, made me think of this thread and some others:

If you want to know what a man is really like, take notice how he
                      acts when he loses money.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

                      Lep

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.
