  I don't think it's a complicated question given the fact that millions are playing each & everyday.
  So- do you " see/envision" yourself stepping up to the plate to collect your cheque sometime in the foreseeable future?

  Thats a very good question!

  I am sure that there might be a slight chance that some people play the lottery, because they hope to win when they are reincarnated in 2099.  Hopefully before the mania of Y2K + 100 commences.

  (Mostly buddhists play to win in the next lifetime, because they believe in that sort of thing.)

  i see my chances greatly increased with the fact i buy  a ticket.  my local games now  have a min cost of $14.50 a week, so im glad i have some pools  to share the  costs with.

  You ask a lot of these polls, I wonder what do you think about this? Do you think you will win someday?

  Personally, I think that I may win something reasonable but not the big big one. I've hit the lottery in other areas of life, just need more luck with games 

  People wouldn't play if they didn't think they would win. They can make up excuses like helping education....pure entertainment....whatnot, but ultimately the goal is to win. You don't go to the theater to look at a blank screen, you don't go to restuarants to watch others eat. As such you play to win. After all, who wouldn't want to? Obviously the chances of this ever happening are very slim, but it does not hurt to have dreams and aspirations. I think it's important to maintain a line between dream and fantasy though— a big difference between "hoping" for (playing casually) and "expecting" a win (playing until broke).

  On the other hand, if a hypothetical crystal ball (one 100% correct) told me that I would never win the lottery in my life, I sure as heck wouldn't play. I would gamble it elsewhere, or just use the crystal ball to show me tomorrow's stock prices 

  • If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
  • If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?
  • I believe Joan Ginther ("world's luckiest woman") merely played lottery as a tax strategy. Evidence: zero prize claims through 10 years after her last Lotto Texas annuity payment!

  I agree with your " Restaurant & Movie" scenario LM- but l do not ask these questions as a " Poll",  l am not data mining.l   merely want to see how people respond to the question. For instance its rare to read where someone says " Yes, l will win in my lifetime"- but as you pointed out, no one plays to NOT win. When one does win, then and only then do we read " l knew l was going to hit it someday".
  With so many preaching " Don't waste your money" ..l thought it would be good to ask a reverse question.

  I seriously doubt Buddhists play the lottery,  but point taken. Reincarnation is a philosophy shared by Hindus as well.In fact l think Buddha was a Indian fella to begin with.g

  Covering all your bets huh Goon- saying you persistent carries weight. Some folk have won the lottery after playing for decades.  So you hang in there ...as long as you can.
  Out local convenient store clerk is a Sikh and he likes saying"  when you play, don't worry about how much you lost- look at it as Ocean Money"... l asked him once to explain the term " Ocean Money" and he said if you throw money into the ocean and turn your back for a minute- you can't pinpoint where you threw it, its gone forever. I guess that explains it then.

  And you have demonstrated that you clearly don't understand the subject matter, gambling:

  The above sentence shows your ignorance of the gambling business, as you are comparing the other businesses with none of their product being offered to you.

  The business of gambing is not winning, but the chance to win. There's a difference. If people went to a business and the product was winning, that would be a charity. You go there, they give you money.

  A gambling business provides a venue and banks the bets for the customer's chance to win. The product is the action.

  Your focus is only on the end goal, wininng. Well, as they say, life is a journey. It's not about the destination, it's about enjoying the ride. As such, playing lottery games is not about winning, its the excitement of playing for a chance to win.

  Sorry, but I disagree. People care more about the end result than the opportunity. Otherwise they wouldn't play. If a lottery player never wins anything, not even a lower prize, do you seriously believe they will keep playing? Nope. Winning is what keeps them coming back. Same with casinos. There is no excitement, no return customer if they never win. They may enjoy trying to win, but that breaks down eventually—  winning is what motivates most. You seem to be confusing people who don't really care much about the lottery to those who are active players.
