I don't know about all the debt ... if they keep winning then it should all be paid off by the end of the year.

There must be some local taxes being collected from each win.

...

I heard it from some where.  I just looked it up http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/congress-can-ease-puerto-ricos-debt-crisis/2015/02/26/535f2aee-b877-11e4-a200-c008a01a6692_story.html

Looks like congress figured out a way to ease their debt crisis.  It is even more coincidental with two jackpot wins.  It really does seem like they're using the lottery system to transfer wealth from other places to certain places with high debt.

Quite frankly - I never thought about that.  It's pretty nifty that the Islands are getting a taste of the winning spirit!

I'll bet there isn't a country on earth that doesn't have debt.

To think someone in the US is manipulating balls (not RNG) in a machine in a game with odds of 175 million to 1...175 MILLION to 1 to help Puerto Rico??? get out of debt....

      wow, just....wow.

That's my laugh for the day!

Very interesting.  Aren't they in quite a bit of debt  there?

And what if the person who won is from California?

        Green laugh

If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?

Congratulation to the PB. winner. I still want to hear about the great improvements made in that area with the new taxes windfall.

That's the thing a new tax bill is in the works to lower income taxes(highest 30%) , so the whole conspiracy to collect more tax money for debt doesn't make much sense when they are currently lowering taxes.

This is great news for the winner because only 30% in income taxes is great ,but If is a conspiracy then I'm willing to volunteer to be the winner.

With all the early jackpot hits (5 out of past 11), is Powerball in the red? Sure seems that way.

And even if PB is still profitable, it's not the bonanza it once was for participating jurisdictions.

As for the new PB matrix and second chance drawing, that's like the death knoll of the game.

Yes, Powerball is in the red. It has paid out nearly 40% of sales this year to jackpots alone.

Still early, Does MUSL have the ability to take from future runs/pots or do they just have to stick to the regular raises and hope their actuarial calculations play out for the rest of the year
