Back to the Original Question. We find a Pattern or have a System. The System is for Pick 3. It Produces 20+/- Combinations on a Set Formula. A Little Back testing shows some Hits. You Run a Complete History of the Game Through Your System. (If you have not done this at least once with one of your system, well,,,,YOU JUST DON'T BACK TEST). The Big Back Test is a Total Loser as expected. All said and done a Commitment to the System beginning with the Very first Game loses $3000. Sounds like a bust to you? Maybe, maybe Not.
The Back Test Summary (Totals) are Not Enough to Evaluate the System because they are at Best 1/2 of a Successful System. The Most important Part of any System is how you Bet. There are many ides for this. Rules that Real Gamblers Know.
So you Turn to the Cash Flow Created by the Big Back Test. You See that there were some Deep Holes but there are a Few Islands above the Water Line. The History is kind of like a Land Surface Profile. There are islands along the history line rising a few thousand Dollars above the Water Line. There are Many more "Peaks" below the Surface. The Islands come in Groups Separated by a Few or often Many Games. The First thing you say is "If I would have played When the Islands Were present... Just Looking above the Water Line will mean you miss something important. Looking closer at the Cash Flow you finally get down to the answer to the Questions: How much did I Win and How Many Games did it take to Win. If it Takes to Many Games to Hit, You Sink. If it Hits Quick Enough (at Cost Less than Prize) You Rise.
The Only Way that You Can come Out ahead is to Limit your Dive Depth. Limit the Number of Games that you play between Hits. Let's say that you are Playing for a $500 Straight Prize. Begin by Setting a Limit on the Dive. Never Dive Deeper (Move in 1 period between Hits) than the Value of the Prize. In reality you Probably should never drop more than 1/2 of the Prize you Seek. You decide that you will Stop Playing when you have to dig deeper than $250 Between Hits, and you lose a maximum of $250 and miss the Next Hit. You must resist the Temptation to Chase your Money and you therefore miss out on the Next Hit. Example, 20 Combinations per Game Played as Straights. $250/20=12.5 Games. If the Next Hit comes before 13-14 Games, You profit. You Rise. The Land is Still Below the Surface in the Long Overall Game Graph, but it Rises when the Hit Comes before 25 Games. You missed it if the Space between hits was more than your Dive Limit. To Be Sure it takes a Minimum Number of Hits Overall to have any Chance of Coming Out Ahead. It is really only Possible to make a Profit playing against the Real Odds of the Game and Giving up around 10% to the House. Giving up 50% + taxes to the "Government" make it essentially Impossible.
My Point, It takes a System that Gets Enough Hits and a Betting System working In Harmony to Achieve Success. And I do understand that a Total Back Test showing a Winning Dive Set does not mean Winning in the Future; But it Sure would be a Nice Place to Start From.
