  LOL I think the only application of math puzzles to gaming is to get a bunch of puzzle nerds together and place bets on who can solve them first. 4 is a pretty sweet number.

  What are the exact rules of four fours? It rings a bell because we had a middle school math teacher who was into puzzles. I think we did five fives to practice order of operations.

  Good question. I'm not a puzzle historian but I think originally these puzzles were meant to be limited to basic operations and symbols most people know. You can use .4... with an overline to represent the repeating decimal 0.4444..... = 4/9, but that's hard to put in type on a forum. I've seen webpages where people have solved it up to the tens of thousands using obscure functions represented with Greek letters and cheating by using "squ" and "cube" to represent ^2 and ^3. I think if a 5th grader can't figure out what a solution is supposed to represent, then you've used too much fancy math.
