  In NJ at the time it ws common to see school kids get a newspaper from a newstand (they cost 5 cents vack then)m look at the next to the last page were the racetrack rwsults were listed, see the number and go "aw crap".

  Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.

  Players could win $60 for a dime bet and the boys still had a 40% advantage. When state governments got into the game, they grabbed 50% with minimum 50 cent bets. The boys used the state's drawing and still paid 600 to 1. 

  The creative ways the boys found random numbers was interesting too.
