Container garden

This past week I transplanted the squash plants into individual containers having double chimneys for support. I originally seeded four containers with three seeds in each container, Some came up in each container and some did not. When I transplanted the squash I dug down deep enough to bury up to the first leaf on the plant. I was out yesterday and added more potting mix to the squash containers as the plants grew some. Will add the potting mix up to the first leaf until they have reached their height. The squash plants look healthy so far. Will end up with three containers of yellow butter and three containers of Fordhook zucchini.

Only one Siberian tomato plant survived I started from seed and that is up about four inches. I banked the potting mix on the tomato plant to the first leaf also. Will be hit and miss if the tomato plant survives or produces any tomatoes before it gets to cold.

I will probably start a bed of radishes in two or three weeks in my elevated container which is about three foot square. Temperatures are starting to cool down for the fall planting.

I was at Home Depot Friday and I purchased one six inch container of orange Chrysanthemum and one 4.5 inch container of red Zinnia. Yesterday I transplanted them into my 2.5 gallon flower pails.

The Marigolds that were hanging on the shepherds pole in the front yard got pretty raggedy and were dying out. So I took the Torneia plant I had in the back yard and hung it on the shepherds pole. The Torneia plant is nice and bushy and flowers well. I will just trash the Marigold plant when I need the 2.5 gallon container for my Swiss Chard when I plant those in a week or so.

May think of some other easy to grow vegetables for fall planting.

Container garden

Just out on the deck tying pepper plants higher up the stake to hold the weight of peppers growing.

Looked at the squash boxes I reseeded and one container has yellow butter squash up. I will go out tomorrow and prepare the plastic lining to hold the container mix banking around the plants.

This & That

Went to the gym about 1200 hrs had a good workout and got home about 1310 hrs. Checked the lottery numbers and lost on the 927 I played. The 936 was drawn. Lost a whole big dollar. That sure was upsetting.Thud Went out and had some tobaky and coffee.

Decided to get out the cart and one of my garden pans a rake and shovel. Took it behind the back fence and loaded up those two 16 x 16 ground boxes into the pan. Took the soil and spread it over some tree roots on the lawn. Put that stuff away and disassembled the wood from the ground box. Got all that ready to take to recycling center.

Then I went out and got the old gas grill and took that out in front of the garage.Took it apart enough to get it in the car to take to the scrap yard with an old radiator I have. Why take that stuff to the recycling center and unload into their dumpsters and get nothing for it. At least I might get a couple bucks at the scrap buyer for my effort.

I will take the wood and plastic with other throw away stuff to the recycling center.

Container garden [the squash plants]

While I was on the patio deck cleaning this & that from the shelf rack I was looking at the squash plants. They were dying and did not look to healthy so I went over and took a look at them. The stems were split open near the potting mix level. So I yanked all of them out.

I also had them staked to grow more vertically which probably was not a good idea.

I reseeded four containers. Two with zucchini and two with the yellow butters. While I was at it I put a smaller chimney in each container about eight inches in diameter that went on the inside of the larger chimney which is about twelve inches in diameter. With a small chimney inside a larger chimney should give added support for the squash leaves to rest on. I had the smaller chimneys on hand from previous plantings which were done for the year.

I just read this article which says you can bank your soil around the squash up to the first leaf level for added support. Now when the plants come up I will  take a clean one gallon plastic milk container and cut the bottom out and cut it up further to have room for more potting mix to the first leaf level. The jug can be supported with the smaller chimney around the perimeter. Now I will add potting mix around the plant as it grows to the first leaf level.

I should have enough time left for them to produce squash before cold weather. Takes about 45 days after germination to flower. That should be around October first. Does not get that cold until about sometime in November.

This & That

Went to the gym about 1200 hrs and got back about 1315 hrs. Had a good workout.
Sorted out and put stuff back on the shelf rack when I got back. Took my time and needed to clean up some things before I put them back on the shelf.
Took stuff out to the garage that was not put back on the shelf rack.

Now I have extra space available on the shelf rack.

Played lottery and lost on both draws. $4.00 shot in the anus.
