A North Carolina man was arrested last week in connection with stealing lottery tickets from a Hilton Head Island convenience store, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office incident report.

Gary Lake Stith, 42, of Littleton, N.C., was charged with violating the South Carolina Education Lottery Act on Jan. 5 and booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center. Stith was released Jan. 6 after posting $10,000 in bond, according to the jail's online log.

The incident report states that surveillance tapes showed a man who was doing construction work at The Pantry on 85 Pope Ave. reach up and take lottery tickets from a display behind the register.

Stith, one of the construction workers who had been working at the time, said during a Sheriff's Office interview that he took a bunch of tickets at about 1:35 a.m. Jan. 5 while the store was closed, the report states. He said he intended to pay for them when the store reopened.

In the interview, Stith said he scratched all the tickets and because none of them were winners, threw them on the ground next to the Dumpster, the report states.
