CNN producer tells what it's like to win lottery twice

Feb 17, 2012, 9:04 am (88 comments)

Georgia Lottery

I am a two-time lottery winner. I have claimed a $100,000 lottery ticket in November and a $1 million lottery ticket Monday. Both came from scratch off. Everyone has been asking me what it's like to win and so I'll tell you.

A big win is an amazing blessing that I still can't believe is real. And then to be blessed more than once is just extraordinary.

But nothing comes easy. We all go through rough times in our lives, and people don't know the road that one must walk to reach a happy destination finally.

I believe that this blessing came to me because I have worked very hard. I am so fortunate to have a full-time job that I enjoy and co-workers who are good friends. I am thankful for this every day.

But in the last few years some personal circumstances caused me to acquire more debt than I ever thought I would have. Facing a lot of debt can be a real nightmare. It's a good thing that I enjoy working or I might not survive the triple shifts I sometimes take on.

We play lottery every once in a while. It was my husband's idea to buy the ticket for me both times. The $1 million ticket was around our seventh anniversary and Valentine's Day. He thought it would be a funny way to celebrate our love, but little did we know how it would change our lives.

When the first lottery ticket came in November, I was flabbergasted. My car had a big dent in it, and it needed a tuneup. It came just at the right time so that my husband, daughter and I could buy a new sparkling car and finally pay off that evil debt that was plaguing us.

Then, to win a second time and for that amount was a bit of a miracle. The quote that's been going around the Internet is that I was "numb" when I found out. This is true. I just could not believe it.

Perhaps what is even harder to believe is the wild reaction that everyone had and how the story spread like wildfire. I thought that I would just chat with the woman at the lottery claims office, she would write a little blurb for the lottery's website, and no one would really know about it except for the people who check the lottery website. Well, I am a journalist, and I should've known better. The minute it hit the press, my phone and e-mail blew up with congratulations from all over the country and parts of the world.

What's my advice for all the curious folks out there? I want you to know that you must always have faith, always work as hard as you possibly can and do your best to do what is right. I do not recommend scratching your life away at a lottery machine, but rather, focusing on making those around you happy every day.

Now, I am certainly no Mother Teresa, but this quote from her really inspires me and I'd like to share it with you so that you can remember it when you're trying to win in life.

"Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God -- the rest will be given."

Nice !!  Glad to get some insight as to how an ordinary, everyday hard worker with debt, had some luck and extra luck for a second time.. It is just a good story to read down through. Even shows you how fast word spreads when you publicly talk about your win (might be a sign to change a few things if you don't want the publicity)....Being positive and doing positive things has its rewards....Kudos to her and her family !!!

You know, reading this article in her own words, ring a few things to mind. Irrespective of your political, religious or racial inclination, we all have similar problem on a very basic level. She mentions a not so flattering situation on her finacial state a few years back. We can hit each other over different stands as people but, we all share common problems sometimes. I do not consider myself either left or right, I just want a good leader. I do not object to anyone's faith in one religion over the other, I might disagree on how one tries to intimidate the other sometimes, resulting in unecessary loss of innocent lives. I say, let's disagree, we can't help it but, no need to shut one down over the other.

To the lucky lady, congratulations, enjoy it and maybe just maybe, this might be a relief to correct the financial mistakes she made, conciously or unconciously.

Winning scratch-off ticket has nothing to do with working hard. A bum from the street could come at the right place and time and hit. Criminals have hit. Abusive and lazy people have hit. Hard work has nothing to do with it. Congrats all the same.

Scratch tickets can lead to a gambling addiction. Gambling in any kind of games is very dangerous if you do not stick to a budget.

You must be very old.

We don't call them "bums" anymore.

We call them "homeless" now.

It's much easier to see them as "victims" that way.

Which opens the door for politically connected people to get high-paying government jobs as "coordinators" in social welfare agencies.

In fancy offices.

So they can help the "homeless".

Cuz nobody would want to help "bums".

Or give people tax dollars for high-paying jobs in fancy offices to "coordinate" helping them.

Yeah, I agree. I was on the verge of being a scratch addict when I was a college freshman. :(

I would have to say RTF Article and look at the last sentence in the 5th paragraph.....Working triple shifts to pay off debt ....thats where the "working hard" came in.....no bums or criminals or lazies there..its just nice to hear about a person with that kind of work ethic having a lottery windfall...Patriot

This CNN producer has inspired me so much! Yesterday, I bought a $1 scratch off, positive mind-set and got a triple 21 symbol, a prize of $3 in return.

I also got one number right on my Mega Millions quick pick (number 40). I'm beginning to win again. Embarassed

I seriously hope you're kidding.. Religious people are annoying. Anything that is good or unexplainable "must be God's work" yet they seem to not realize that if there truley were a God.. It wouldn't take a lottery win to supply them a new car, roof over there head, or to pay off some over priced student loans etc.

Why a sudden comment on religion? Since you are new in here you don't seem to know about the atmosphere in this forum. Being anti-religious is an absolute taboo in LP. If you know the average demographic of lottery players, you will quicly understand. I am not religious at all, but I refrain from criticizing religion in here because of the backlash.

But one thing is kinda strange. I've never met any non-religious people who have very positive opinions on religious people.... Hmm....

ive never meet many atheists that play the lotto, logically they say, its stupid. sure quite a few will bang on all day about how the odds suck at me; and im more likely to get struck by a meteor. and quite a few will bang on about how they would share a win, but very few will ante up a buck.

personally im an atheist, but ill ante up the buck or $5, on the "any odds are better than zero odds princilple."

as to god, ill wait until im dead to make my descision who to follow. i have eternity after all right? no need to rush into these things.

Well, I am not an atheist but I am a hardcore deist with Unitarian Universalist leaning, so I can be just as reviled as atheist to uber-religious folks. ;) God might be out there, but he has better things to do than arranging someone's lottery numbers. Or maybe intervening with human affair was never of his job description.

Oh for heaven's sake. Many of us have doubts about religion, belief or non-belief in a Deity. I have my share of doubt, I consider myself an Agnostic, I am not an Atheist but I still question GOD's existence. However, I do NOT ever insult anyone's religious point of view. I smartly deviate from such topics but I still say "God Bless You" Why, you ask? Because I do not disbelief but I am waiting for a proof to belief not condemn.

That being said, I don't care if people pray for lottery winnings, whom am I to tell another human being what to believe in and what not to? Here you are spouting on, how tired you are of hearing about people's faith in GOD and yet, do not want to be insulted in your belief system, which, is non-belief. Allow me to ask you, "Who the heck died and made you dictator on people's faiths and beliefs?" Laissez Faire, and move on with your life, without insulting people's belief system, not in public, not over the internet, not on a lottery post when someone, decides to give thanks to a being they believe in.

That came off as a long rant on my part. I just do not understand why any side decides to bring in religion or lack of it in a negative format. If someone wants to thank their creator in a positie and uplifting way, so be it. If someone does not want to do so, okay. But no need to be rude and condescending about it.

That being said, it is not me being tolerant, it is me being respectful of people and their beliefs. If they don't hurt or condescend others around them,  what is the problem, right? I am not a happy camper here. I was hoping it would surpass the current Mega Millions Jackpot and really make a statement to lottery players.

Now we can suggest that sales are LAGGING. If it flips again at this rate I'll be back on XANAX.

Anyone with a brain could have predicted this.

Raising the price 100% in this economy is insane.Only the hardcore gamblers will think its alright and continue to throw money at it.Most will wait until the jackpot gets to $100,000,000 or more before trying to hit the jackpot.

Yes, the economy is blimy and yes, raising the prices was not a smart move but, when they doubled the price AND doubled the starting jackpot, they assumed hey, at double the jackpot price, people would jump to that, an extra dollar wouldn't hurt them. Apprently, they were WRONG! Now, look at the trend for these past two draws, heck, the jackpot increased by a lesser amount than it would have at the previous cost (feel free to correct me, if I am wrong on this one....thanks). Point being, it will be a long draw out before it reaches a $100 million mark at this rate, provided nobody wins.

I am respectful. But religion does not warrant respect. If you want to believe in an invisible man in the sky.. Fine. But don't get pissed when people aren't respectful of your childish dreams. Weak people believe in "God". It's like counseling.. Just another way to profit of the weak.

We have freedom of religion and freedom of speech in this country which means people can openly praise their God if they so choose and you can't stop them.

It also means you can use your freedom of speech to attack them for their beliefs if you wanna be a schmuck.

And you are a schmuck, aren't you?

 Cletu$,

I think many of us, have a very good reasoning capability, thank you very much. Rad and I just pointed out by HOW MUCH the sales were lagging. I know many people did not play the powerball last night, yours sincerely, didn't either.

It seems to me that you just made my point for me.Thank you.

I am respectful. But religion does not warrant respect. If you want to believe in an invisible man in the sky.. Fine. But don't get pissed when people aren't respectful of your childish dreams. Weak people believe in "God". It's like counseling.. Just another way to profit of the weak.

Get real. Wake up.

Get lost!

This is Lottery Post, not Huffington Post!

Blog there if you wish to participate in Intolerance, Fascism and far left Sycophancy!   Puke

Nobody was asking you to adopt their beliefs.

We have freedom of religion and freedom of speech in this country which means people can openly praise their God if they so choose and you can't stop them.

It also means you can use your freedom of speech to attack them for their beliefs if you wanna be a schmuck.

And you are a schmuck, aren't you?

Always attacking the good people because you're afraid of the bad people.

"Always Attacking the good people because you're afraid of the bad people."

You have to be religious.. Because you're making no sense. Attacting the good people? What are you talking about? Categorizing religious people as "good people" isn't even close to the truth. The leading cause of murder is "God". Makes his followers "good people".

My point is.. If you want to believe in some invisible man in sky and some evil man somewhere below our feet... Be my guest. But I'm going to openly criticize anybody who does. because your an idiot.

You seem to forget that the biggest murderers in history were Hitler (12,000,000 including concentration camps and civilians WWII), Stalin (23,000,000 including the purges plus Ukraine's famine) & Mao (49-78,000,000)!

So typical of Progressive Sycophants "Free Thinking" Parrots!!!!!

It really isn't very nice of you to call anybody an idiot because of what they believe in. I am an Agnostic, still waiting for the prove of God's existence but I do not insult anyone who has that belief. Again, as long as no is bothering anybody, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? I mean, did anyone threaten your life? If someone accosted you for your non-belief, remember, it is the freedom of words, words are just that, words, sme taken with a grain of salt.

I ask you again, is it personal disgust or just an intellect disgust on your part? I have come across many intelligent individuals that believe in a higher power, does that make all of them idiots? No. Has religion in the past and current, created some strife? Maybe. Yet, I have met good religious people and good non-religious people. There are bad and evil on both sides of the theist and non-theist spectrum. The idea of belief or, lack of belief should not result to mudslinging. The reason why so much malice is being thrown from both sides is because, the worst extremists on both sides, have not done much to present their point across, with decorum and respect.  That is where we have a problem. I have been accosted for my gnostic beliefs however, I rather not trade barbs and insults. Come on, we have so much to disagree on, let's leave religion as one of the topics not to bring to the forefront.

   Truce?

No truce for me! As long as "ibeat" is posting Fascist hatred that does not belong on Lottery Post, I will confront the hatred. Extremists must be dealt with if we are to avoid this most insidious and murderous behavior!
