Ireland Lottery doesn't have enough cash to pay €94m mystery winner

Euro Millions

The mystery winner of the €94m Euromillions jackpot is not expected to claim their prize until next week because the Ireland National Lottery does not have enough money in the bank to pay them.

As of close of business Thursday, the lucky holder of the winning ticket in Tuesday's Euromillions draw had not turned up at the National Lottery headquarters in Dublin.

That's unsurprising given that lottery officials said they won't have the money in the bank until next week, when all participating countries transfer their respective portions of the jackpot to the National Lottery's account.

The prize — half of the total €188m Euromillions jackpot shared with a winner in Belgium — is the second-largest lottery jackpot ever won in Ireland after former cleaner and mother-of-six Dolores McNamara picked all the winning numbers for a €115m jackpot in the Euromillions draw in 2005.

The new winner is losing out on a potential €3,450 a day in interest, based on a 2pc rate. But the winner can rest assured that once the money is banked, it will earn them €1.26m a year in interest alone — after tax.

But speculation as to the identity of the winner grew yesterday as rumours abounded that the ticket holder lives in Beaumont, or maybe Blanchardstown, in north Dublin.

If they do, they were keeping a low profile, as local councillors, publicans and business owners said they have heard nothing to back up the claims.

While National Lottery officials are still refusing to divulge where the winning ticket was bought, they did confirm that it was purchased somewhere in the greater Dublin area.

The winner rang the lottery office on Wednesday to confirm they have the golden ticket and it's understood that they were told to take a few days to let the life-changing news sink in.

"We're advising the winner to sign it and keep it in a safe place," a Lottery spokeswoman said.

And when the winner does eventually claim the prize, they will be given the standard "Winner Advice" booklet and DVD, which includes advice on security, dealing with charities, etc.

so instead of getting the money right now, the winner must wait until next week for all the money to be transfered over. Sounds like a non-story to me. In the US it takes about 4 weeks for the money to be made available to the jackpot winner.

i don't know where this 4 week thing came form in usa

or even 3 weeks lie

its just about 2 whole weeks

,  all in all 2 weeks for winners for winners of pb/mm to get the money as of winning date, NOT 4 weeks

also this is form powerball FAQ

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY MONEY?

It takes up to two weeks to collect the cash from the stores around the nation. If you go to the lottery to claim your prize after that two weeks, then, in many states, you can generally have the jackpot money (all cash or the first of the annual payments) hit your bank account the next day - maybe the following day if you come to the lottery office very late in the day. Some lotteries must work through the state system and that can delay the payment.

that's why u have just under 2 weeks to get lawyers/ ever thing planned out and taken care of.

anyone who waits to 3rd/4th week is losing money , but sense they now worth millions , i guest losing a few bucks don't bug people much at all

so we have people who wait to  claim on 3/4th week and then everyone starts whole 3/4 week lie to get the money

its just not true. and it cost people money who wait that long

now for euro millions,  no clue how long it takes, Ireland Lottery could take 4 weeks, am clueless on that.

2 weeks folks , not 3 and sure as hell not 4

In IL... it's 4 to 6 weeks for anything over 25K... cut and paste straight from the IL website... got it from the web, so it must be trueLOL

When do I receive my check?

Claims up to $25,000 will generally be paid at the claim center on the same day. If your prize is over $25,000, your payment will be made within four to six weeks from your claim date and will be mailed to the address printed on your claim form.

I wouldn't mind waiting a week for €94M. I'd actually welcome the wait.

I love this line the most "But the winner can rest assured that once the money is banked, it will earn them €1.26m a year in interest alone — after tax."

Yeah, and they called it a "potential" interest rate return.

Meaning it could be lower?

Idk, its hard to get 2% interest rate in the US. But even without the interest, if you commit to spend €1M a year after winning the 94, you would need 94 years to be broke. Sad Cheers

I totally agree. Lottery winners need a spending plan. NOT high priced, snivelling, Winny attorneys who are greedy slimy savers with everyone else's money.

I think all U.S. lotteries should have this available for jackpot winners.

I Agree! Ditto. Completely fell for it. This isn't a story. A story would be if the winner had to wait a year for them to scramble to come up with the funds. For the winner to be able to walk into the office next week and get the money then is still much much faster than our 2 big lottery systems. This is nothing but a bogus attention grabber and it's insulting to the Irish. No No Shame

Seems like a dumb PR move that the Ireland Lottery went public with this info, especially since the winner has yet to come forward to claim the jackpot.

Or perhaps you didnt read it the first time and just assumed what the meaning of the title was??? Try and get a grip next time Ted.

I guess that is still good the winner will have ample time to plan with regards to her winnings. Having low profile will avoid too much attention therefore they will not put themselves in unnecessary risk. There might be people who will take advantage of them because of their huge jackpot price.
