North Carolina Lottery

North Carolina residents can now play jackpot lottery games while pumping their gas.

A new service being offered by the N.C. Education Lottery allows players to enter in the drawing in one of the jackpot games — Powerball, Mega Million, or Carolina Cash 5 — all from the convenience of their gas pump.

To use this service, customers will swipe a debit card at the pump to get Quick Pick numbers for the next drawing in their jackpot game of choice. A receipt will then print their numbers.

Lottery players can also apply to get a text of their lucky numbers and a text if they are a winner.

Small winnings, up to $599, will be credited directly the debit card used to enter the lottery. The player must pay a $1 transaction fee to Linq3 to cover for the deposit service. Larger winnings, over $599, must be claimed at a lottery office.

Several features ensure purchases are made responsibly. They include:

  • Only debit cards can be used in Play At The Pump purchases. Credit cards are not allowed.
  • Customers must be 18 years old or older. The service quickly checks the age of the owner of the debit card before a purchase can happen.
  • Limits placed on purchases. A customer can spend no more than $70 per debit card per week
  • The lottery service is optional to lottery retailers. It is currently offered at 120 locations across North Carolina, including all Murphy Express stores.

The North Carolina Lottery set up a special website to learn more about the service and find locations where it is available.

Wow, like some people aren't already on the edge of killing someone while waiting

for their turn at the pump. Now there's the extra added feature of someone not sure

how much they want to play and if they want it supersized.

Large call for desperation. Sounds like Tennessee to me.

not enough (probably hardly any) people are going into the actual store to pay for the gas anymore. surprised they are not trying to move the candy, cigs, sodas, coffee, etc. outside too since no one comes in to overpay for these items. just put a canopy over a bunch of vending and lottery machines and close the store. only used for bathroom anyway. can even put one of those outside.

LOL we dont have that problem here in NC...there is a gas station about every two feet here..We got at least 2 at almost every intersection. The only problem we have is when we fill up they usually drop the price by a penny or 2 after we've finished pumping LOL

Congratulation to the NC. lottery player's for being able to play their main games at the pump.  It don't sound to great , specifically this feature, I'm Quoting it "Limits placed on purchases. A customer can spend no more than $70 per debit card per week." Let think about this, all the game involve can be purchase for multiple draws including your quick picks. Let said , you have some numbers you keep in faithfully each week in the Cash 5/ a set of 10. Here the kicker, you're one of the people that like to keep their number in play for a week or the month. You can use up you limit on that one debit card & still not get all your games in. Who wanted to carry around multiple debit cards just to keep all your selection in? Better yet, who wants to make multiple trips back to totally complete your week or month worth of plays?

You gotta give them credit for trying to 'think out side of the box'.  I think this is aimed to help capture the 'occasional' player who plays on impluse.  I like the idea.

Went to the one gas station in town that does this at the pump.  Wanted to experience the process 1 time.  Ok, the process seemed simple.  Insert debit card, choose debit. The pump then asks if you want lottery tickets. You can choose between pb, mm, carolina pick 5.  These are only qp for 1 draw!  You must purchase in batches of 5, p10, or 20.  Choose 5 just for this one time., completed all questions, was then told i was not 18 and not sold the tickets. Well, let me tell you, I was very surprised to be told that since I have more years behinpd me than ahead of me.

Sum of it all, after talking woth clerk, it is down more than it is up! If you are reading this NCEL, pleAse fix your programming.  Telling  an AARP member you are not old enough to play doesnt fly.

Sorry, that sucks.  How did they know how old you were?

They use the debit card to verify your age. Already checked with financial institution and it is correct.  Simply a lottery system failure.
