Powerball

By Todd Northrop

A single winning Powerball lottery ticket matching all six numbers was sold in California and will claim a $447.8 million jackpot.

If the winner chooses the lump-sum cash value, they will receive a one-time cash payment of $279.1 million, minus federal taxes. California does not deduct any state taxes from lottery prizes.

The Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega shows the initial taxes that will be withheld on the jackpot.

The massive $447.8 million grand prize is the is the 7th-largest jackpot in Powerball game history, and the 10th-largest jackpot of any game in US lottery history.  (See the top 25 annuity and cash value lottery jackpots below.)

California lottery officials say the winning ticket was sold at Marietta Liquor & Deli, located at 27985 Bradley Road in Sun City (Riverside County), about 80 miles (128.74 kilometers) south of Los Angeles.

Officials say the earliest the ticket could be redeemed is 8 a.m. Monday. The winner has one year to claim the prize.

Marietta Liquor & Deli will receive a $1 million retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket. The retailer bonus comes from a separate fund and is not subtracted from the winner's jackpot prize.

The lucky numbers drawn Saturday night were 20, 26, 32, 38, and 58, with Powerball number 3.  The Power Play number was 2.

In addition to the California jackpot winner, the state was also lucky for second-prize winners, with two second-prize tickets worth $322,016 each sold in the state. Another second-prize ticket worth $1,000,000 was sold in Ohio.

By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level. This accounts for the discrepancy between the second-prize amounts with the California and Ohio tickets.

73 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 8 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 9 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $18,319 this drawing.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Powerball jackpot resets to $40,000,000 for the next drawing to be held Wed., Jun. 14.

The two secondary prizes in California lost out on over $600K due to para-mutuel rules...just saying.

I won nothing from PB or SLP -- not even a buck. No Pity!

The saddest thing about a winning jackpot, besides the fact that I didnt win it, is the excitement ends.  It's a lot of fun when these jackpots are high, if only for the entertainment value.

On the upside, the ticket was sold in Sun City - a planned retirement community, meaning the winner is probably a senior. LOL

If they lump it, the lucky winner will take home approx. $168,576,400. Hopefully, they will collect it on one of those mobility scooters -- with flame detailing & loud mufflers. Hurray!

I thought CA ran out of money.  The lottery that is.  I should have played differently.  Oh well.  The funny thing is most of those numbers were in the pyramid.

Think about it this way.

The new cash jackpot is $24.9 million. You win that and stay under the radar while everyone is watching for the big winner to come forward. And....I'm pretty sure I can retire and live comfortably on $15 million after taxes.

I Agree!

just checked my 2 tickets

while I admit to being a bit disappointed that  it didn't roll over and I didn't get anything for my $4

I look forward to the next XXL pot and who knows who might be the next big winner

we all have an equal chance and who knows who the next lucky stiff will be

Good luck to those playing the MM and other games Lep

The senior will probably take the ticket in to have it checked where he or she bought it, and the clerk will end up being the winner.

You are right, the excitement ends for the rest of us but is just beginning for the Winner.  Congratulations to whomever won.

Sun City is south of Riverside, west of Palm Springs, and north of Temecula.

My initial reaction to winning any large jackpot would be a feeling of being overwhelmed. Just think how much you have to do:  hire and meet with an atty, a financial planner, a bank, real estate agent, etc. And you have to start packing.

The second prize winner in Ohio will see what the California winners got and say to themselves...

Yep, sad the 2nd place CA winners to only get $322K while a similar winner in Ohio getting $1 million.   An all too common occurrence. Given the high level of sales, presumably there were enough sales to fully pay both 2nd prize winners. However, it seems CA Lottery spreads much of the prize pool to the lower prizes first and then whatever left towards the higher tier prizes.

While I generally discourage playing out of state, for CA players, it may be worth the extra drive. Though it's a gamble, since CA Lottery doesn't tax CA Lottery winnings. If one wins the jackpot, playing out of state would add many millions of dollars in tax. However, for lower tier prizes, in particular 2nd, playing out of state could be worthwhile most of the time due to the much higher payouts. Not guaranteed though, since there have been instances of 2nd place CA Lottery Powerball winners winning well over $1 million dollars though it seems more often it's much less, as was the case this past Saturday.

Wow. again 1 sole winner, who clearly did not need all this cash. I c why some say it is a rigged MM and POWERBALL.

Sad. But happy for the man who won. or a lady, and i pray some 1 who really need it.

Even if 100+ people from most states in U.S.A., finally won this could've been shared with so many, @ 1 million

or a few million each $$$ smh no wonder why some think PB rigged. (Glad i only bought 2.)I'll stick with great winning odds

paying off for me with pick 4 and pick 3(multi-plays) $$$ = a very nice win, when #s i play come out.Smiley

Crazy

Really? What's with the rigged thing, anyway?

These big games, (and the state lottos also) aren't set up for multiple winners. Even games like All or Nothing, and Triple Chance, and Cash 5 aren't set up for multiple winners.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. They don't have to rig anything. Just take a good look at the numbers that are called "odds". That should, should, tell you everything you need to know.

Doesn't really matter if whoever won really needs it or not. They spent the money, bought a ticket, therefore they deserve a chance like anyone else that bought a ticket.

The pick3-4 games are fun. But frankly, $500, or even $5000 doesn't do it for me anyway. I have projects at home that need much more than that.

But, to each his own. That's why there's so many games to choose from.

Good luck!

Thanks for your post.  Personally was having a pity party and didn't see the forest for the trees in your analogy.  I always said just winning the second tier prize or Kentucky's Cashball 225 is all I need.

In any case I'm retiring this December, my third and final career.  Retired Army, soon to be retired PICU respiratory therapist, former veterinary technician and have worked since age of 10.  I can thank my parents for my strong work ethic.  Enough about me and time for a LP member to win something so their article can be on this website!

After I got over my pity party I started thinking about what the winner must be thinking about and overwhelmed has to be key word.  First time I would relish packing, especially knowing I would be flying First Class!  I AM envious.  But another chance to win is always around the corner.

Well, I realize people get excited when the jackpot gets up there. It doesn't matter much to me because ANY jackpot from MM, PB, or my state lotto sets me up for the rest of my life. There is always a next draw.

Also, I never really EXPECT to win a jackpot. I HOPE to win. I've played some sort of lotto for over 30 years and I remember when Ohio had a lotto that was 2 tix for a buck. If I recall, the jackpot was $250,000. The best I ever did was 5 of 6 for about $800 or $900. The odds of today's games are so tough a lot of people just don't realize.

Just keep plugging away. You never know if or when Lady Luck will visit!

Good luck!

Keep plugging away you never know is right.  I highly doubt the winner ever expected to win.  This jackpot was way too much money for my comfort but not that I wouldnt accept it lol.  I have a commitment to split three ways and even with the split, it is more money than I could ever use.

for myself, i dont think of how hard it is to win, I just know there is always a winner so why not me and that is why I play.

and you are right hearsetrax finds the weirdest stuff, but judging from the alias he uses is it any wonder?Troll

Well, the line above said "Post a comment", so I am.
I'm getting awfully doggone tired of never winning anything more than a couple of bucks.
I dislike ANYONE / EVERYONE who has ever said or that believes:

"It'll never happen".

I'm wanting to win this doggone thing every single week. Sometimes, like this very week, I want to stop playing for a while.  (what's a while?).  But, I know if I do, to expect the most "life souring" thing to occur, like my numbers would actually hit.  So, I play every doggone week. I don't waste time with scratch-offs because I can't afford those losses on top of the regular ones.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE THAT I DIDN'T WIN.
I DON'T KNOW IF ANYONE READING THIS CAN RELATE.

Wow. again 1 sole winner, who clearly did not need all this cash.

They sold 67,058,726 tickets and with a possible 292,201,338 combinations, there was only a 23% chance of having one jackpot winning ticket; why did you expect multiple winners?

My tip to you ones that are disgusted with Powerball and megamillions is to stop playing.  Don't throw your money away to california they win far too much due to population advantage.   Play your state lottery pick 5 or pick 6 games.

I do.

I play PB, MM, Texas Lotto, Texas 2 Step, AoN, Triple Chance, and Cash 5.

I got news for ya.

They are ALL hard to win.

But, I am not disgusted because I know what odds are, and just because the odds are better for a particular game doesn't mean a jackpot win is automatic. The odds for Texas Cash 5 are 1 in 435,897. They sell approximately 130,000 tix for each draw, and it's not unusual to go 6 or 8 draws without a winner.

It's all relative.

Hurray!

Green laughAwesome Redd. I could just see a mobility scooter all pimped out.

Yes we can relate Groppo and we feel the same frustration at sometime in our playing lives too. I eventually give up playing then a few months down the road I get back in it. And the cycle repeats and continues.

But I don't play a certain set of numbers because I'm afraid that if I miss playing one week that will be the week my numbers come out. So I just play quik picks when the urge hits me. Still no success however. Confused

The jackpot winning ticket was sold in Sun City, California. I hope the winning ticket steps forward and takes the cash option or the lump sum!

I'm sure the ticket will take a while to consult with professionals, and then step forward to claim the prize. Then the ticket will fly off to a tropical paradise, possibly on a paper airplane. Unfortunately it will then be blown into the ocean by a warm, tropical breeze and disintegrate.

I think cali has won like two jackpots a year for a while but I am not interested when they win I want to be the other winners that do not come from cali.  I know that my state does not have a lot of wins in powerball but we do have a decent amount of second prize winners and I would like to be one of those winners myself.  Maybe even be mega million first oregon winner.-weshar75
