Virginia woman wins $150,000 lottery payout in one Pick 4 drawing

Virginia Lottery

RICHMOND, Va. — Some people have all the luck. In February, that person was Deborah Brown.

When Deborah Brown bought 20 Pick 4 tickets from the Virginia Lottery — all with the same four digits for the same drawing — she just had a feeling.

"A couple of times during the day, I saw those numbers," she said.

A little while later, when she bought 10 more plays — again for the same drawing with that same number combination (1-0-3-1) — she said she was really feeling it.

Turns out, that feeling was right!

When that number combination was drawn in the Feb. 11 night drawing, each of her 30 plays won the $5,000 top prize, which meant total winnings of $150,000.

"I nearly had a heart attack!" the Richmond woman said as she claimed her prize.

She bought all her tickets at Irongate Shell located at 6437 Iron Bridge Road in Chesterfield County.

Ms. Brown said she has no immediate plans for her winnings, but she's considering some home renovation.

Pick 4 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11 p.m. The top prize for a $1 play is $5,000. The chances of matching all four numbers in exact order are 1 in 10,000.

Nice story to start out the week.   Home renovation?  If home not paid for, pay it off or knock years off of your mortgage.

Interesting . Congratulations. I don't play pick 4 but is there a maximum amount you can win with multiple tickets? I looked at the rules but did not see anything. So could she have bought 200 tickets and won $1 million?

Couldn't find any limit either, Artist77

How about page ten, section 6 about you must agree to the media mess, etc?

Yup!  It only works that way in a "flat" payout state (meaning no pari-mutuel payouts) A man did that in NY many years ago ... 1.4 million. Said he had a dream of his deceased mother, played her birthday and WON!!! The story was here on LP so I'm sure you can probably find it ...

Congrats to Ms. Brown!!! I dream of doing the same one day!

Ky has a limit on how may tickets they sell with a certain combination say 1234 straight.  They are not required to notify anybody of the 'liability limit' as they call it.  On Cashball 225, the liability limit is fixed to $1 million/draw.

I think NY's limit is either 3 or 4 million on both P3/4 ... not sure of exact number, and the way they "notify" you is when you can no longer get a number in and the Agent says that number is closed!  Unlike NJ that will keep taking your money and then payout something like $9 ... on a straight p3 or $100 for a p4!!!

Yea, VA goes way overboard with the publicity. They must lose a lot of money to DC. I avoid buying tickets in VA 99.9% of the time. At least the DC rules are vague so you can use a trust to claim.

That's pretty incredible. I wonder if that's a record for pick 4 winnings in a single drawing. Good for her.

Virginia had lots of pick-4 winners playing the same combo multiple times. In August 2017 Wayne Roles won $160,000 by playing the same number straight 32 times and in November of that year Robert Buckner won $100,000 betting $20 on the same combo. A North Carolina player won over $500,000 in less than a year. There are many stories in other states about players betting the same pick-4 combo multiple times and winning. What you seldom read is how much each of these players spend every day. The NC player to spend on average $800 to $1000 every drawing.

It's always neat to see stories about players creating their own large jackpots by betting more money on games with much smaller odds.

I couldn't find it either ... bummer. I remember it though, he lived in NJ and worked as a GM in construction or something like that in NYC. Happened sometime between 2008-09.  I found another closely related story though:

Congratulations, but winning tickets like that are only sold around the Virginia Lottery Headquarters.

Speaking of pick 4, can you still win the maximum amount for a straight if there are repeating numbers, like 2244 or 7771 or 7777?

Knew lots of people that played over $20 or more on more than one pick-3 straight combo and some of them won large amounts of money. Saw people buying multiple tickets on the same lotto, MM, and PB combos too. Regardless of the game, it's all about players creating their own jackpots and with a little bit of luck, hopefully you can win lots of money.

All state lotteries have pick-3 and pick-4 prize liability limit, but it varies from state to state. For instance it's $1.5 million in KY and $5 million in NY. New Jersey doesn't need a limit because their payoffs are pari-mutual, but I believe they have an aggregate limit on the secondary MM and PB prizes and if reached would payout those prizes pari-mutually.

The NJ pari-mutual payoffs work both ways because I won $587 each on the two pick-3 straight numbers I played.
