After the Big Win

Sons of lottery winner relay details of fallout years after the win

By Kate Northrop

A brand-new car bore the brunt of two brothers' frustration after their father refused to share his £3.1 million (US$3.6 million) EuroMillions lottery prize with them.

Two sons decided it was "hammer time" and smashed their father's car with claw hammers when they did not receive a penny of their father's lottery winnings.

In 2012, a group of Stagecoach workers from Corby, Northamptonshire won and split a £38 million (US$44.5 million) EuroMillions jackpot, with father Alex Robertson, now 77, taking home a £3.1 million share.

Now, the Robertson family says they were "ripped apart" by the tension that resulted from sudden influx of money and have come forward with details on the fallout.

Alex Senior reportedly told Alex Junior that he would see "f*** all" from his lottery prize. Instead, he gave his son 200 cigarettes.

"We ended up taking hammers to his two new 4x4 Shoguns," Alex Junior, 45, told The Sun. "We walked up his driveway at 11 o'clock at night and put two claw hammers through the windows of the car. We then reported ourselves to the police."

Alex Senior then accused his other son, William, now 44, of harassment after he allegedly sent him threatening text messages.

William was set to stand trial at Northampton Magistrates' Court in 2013, but the case was dropped after Alex Senior decided not to fly from his residence in Benidorm, Spain, where he lived with his partner Morag, to provide evidence at the trial.

"The lottery win was the worst thing that ever happened to us — it ripped our families apart," Alex Junior said.

Seems like a good way to get the father to change his Will or take other steps to prevent his Son's from inheriting his money/property.

Father knows best. He knew Alex Jnr was worth 200 cigarettes. He should have sent another 200 to William, l bet that would have settled  things. 😎

The winning syndicate should have chosen to remain anonymous, which UK lottery winners have a right to do.

Spoiled brats, even @ that age.   Time for restitution and disown those two losers once and for all.

Yeah this family has been dysfunctional for a long time. That doesn't just come out of nowhere.

The money just amplified existing family issues. The father needs to watch his back or he will end up buried in his backyard.

"It ripped our family apart"..........No Alex Junior it did not rip your family apart. Your old man is just stingy and you and your brother have not grown up yet even though you are in your 40s. Most lottery winners are always eager to share their winnings with their immediate family. And most sons would not destroy their parents property. Stop blaming the lottery. All 3 of you need to look in the mirror, that's where the blame should be.

Odd that the sons' chose that action. What did it change? Nothing.

Odd moreso that they deemed the lottery caused this poor choice of damage.

Own your actions and all it's consequences. That's how adulting works.

A simple and genuine.. congrats would have sufficed.

Yet even in this article the sons' are  thinking they are entitled.

The father should had remained anonymous from the public. From there, he should have invested the money in the stock market to turn the  winnings into 30 million British pounds...

Some children are just evil. .. he knew that those two children would just be more evil with a lot of money

I don't think there's any thing my father or my mother could do that would make me destroy brand new property regardless of the reason

If they didn't get anything before, they're going to get even less now.

Could be why he high-tailed it to Spain.

That is his money to do with as he liked. He did not owe his grown adult children anything. They acted like they were entitled to something.  I would not have given them a Dime after that. I would give any portion I was thinking of giving them to charity. That's crazy, how do you get mad with someone for Their things.

I agree. His sons would have blown through that money and demanded more.

I never understood the sense of entitlement some adult children have in regard to assets of their parents. Unless your adult child has a medical or mental health issue, you do not need to share the winnings.

Money changes the dynamics of a relationship when adults are involved. My parents offered me substantial help with a down payment on my first home but I said no since I was an adult. Yet , I have two friends who have parents that paid for all of their first home.  Never had a mortgage payment. These friends seem to be constantly in a child like dependent relationship even though they have great careers. One did not want to get a vax but deferred to her mother.

Money changes everything and you need to cut those apron strings to be an adult.

I bet the old man wrote off those two lunkheads long before he won anything.

And I bet they did the same and wanted nothing to do with him before he won.
