Powerball

Powerball ticket-buying frenzy this week

By Todd Northrop

This week lottery players across the United States will be pulling out all the stops to try and win Powerball, featuring one of the largest lottery jackpots in history, worth an estimated $1 billion.

The Powerball jackpot has been building for 38 consecutive drawings since the last winner on Apr. 19, when one ticket from Ohio won a $252.6 million jackpot. The ticket was sold at the Get Go at 265 Highland Road in Macedonia, Ohio, and was claimed by an anonymous trust. The winner chose the $134.7 million cash option, which amounts to roughly $79.5 million after state and local taxes are paid

Monday night when there were no Powerball jackpot winners, the new jackpot for Wednesday's drawing was estimated at $1 billion, with a lump-sum cash option of $516.8 million. More than a half-billion dollars in cash!

For the 3rd time, a Powerball jackpot has reached $1 billion. It is the 7th-largest lottery jackpot in US history, as well as the 7th-largest cash option ever offered. (See complete top-25 jackpot rankings for annuity and cash values below.)

Of course, any big winner (or winners) of Wednesday's Powerball jackpot will have to pay taxes on their prize, so the website USA Mega has a handy Powerball Jackpot Analysis page available to calculate the federal and state taxes that would be withheld upon payout. The feature calculates both the initial withholdings and the final tax burden due at the end of the year, and even can show taxes calculated for different IRS filing statuses.

Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, the only app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean.

Some states offer direct online sales, allowing players to bypass the store and purchase tickets from home. States that offer this ability include Michigan (Mega Millions and Powerball), Minnesota (Mega Millions and Powerball), Oregon (Mega Millions and Powerball), Texas (Mega Millions and Powerball), and Virginia (Mega Millions and Powerball). Note that some of these links will only work properly for residents of the states mentioned.

Players outside the USA can use a reputable butler service, which provides scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.

The winning numbers for Monday, July 17, 2023 were 5, 8, 9, 17, and 41, with Powerball number 21.  The Power Play number was 4.

The Monday Double Play drawing results were 9, 37, 38, 62, and 69, with Powerball number 23. Double Play is a game option currently available in 14 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.

Even though nobody won the jackpot Monday, 8 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Arkansas, 1 from Connecticut, 1 from Florida, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Kentucky, 1 from New York, 1 from Pennsylvania, and 1 from Texas.

The 3 second-prize tickets sold in Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas were purchased the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their prizes to $2 million.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.

Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.

Also in the Monday drawing, 116 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000.  Of those tickets, 28 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $200,000, and 9 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $19,460 this drawing.

Following the Monday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $78 million from its previous amount of $922 million and the cash value was raised by $40.3 million from its previous amount of $476.5 million.

The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.

Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.  Tickets cost $2 each.

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

Wow Unbelievable! 🤩

I was sure when I saw the numbers that there would be a few winners. I was surprised to see that the jackpot was not won.

🥳 We all have another chance. Good luck!

I should not be surprised the jackpot has now reached 1 billion dollars, since it have happened before. It does surprise me when someone came on this site the other day saying it is impossible for someone to win the jackpot using birthday numbers. Here is a list of Powerball Jackpot winning birthday number since 2009: Some of these have multiple winners.  If someone were to interview these winners and more, they would say this are birthday numbers of family and friends. Of course some are quick picks as well but nothing is impossible with numbers as the poster suggests:

FYI Michigan players

PB JP odds  - 292,201,338 to 1

Cash after taxes MI  on $516,800,000

$303,620,000 (no city income tax)

$293,284,000 (max city income tax)

So even if you are in one of the dozens of cities that have the income tax you still have about the exact odds in prize money after taxes for the JP

Great info. It is possible, but others have the same birthday, anniversary, etc., so the winner may end up sharing but with $1billion, multiple winners could still walk away with a good amount of money.

I won $16 on one of my tickets so I'll be playing at the Powerball's expense tomorrow!

Good luck to all!

Nice article as usual Todd & Kate.

On Paragraph #7 had addressed this before.   Kentucky has on-line purchases for MM & PB and a slew of other losing propositions.    Please fix this!

Anyway best of luck LP members on these massive jackpots.

Hahaha, it's me that made the post and for the record, I did not say that it's "impossible for someone to win the jackpot using birthday numbers" that's putting words in my mouth 🤣🤣🤣

This is the post.

"Dear Friends,

I hope it is evident to you as sure as the skies are blue, that there is no magical trick to winning the lottery.

It's not in the horoscope, it's not in your birthday dates, it's not in your family shoe sizes, it's not in manifesting a win or possessing it. It's not in trying to beat the system whatever that means.

It's not in all that crap and many more.

Winning the lottery is - let the drums roll - PURE LUCK"

Those that won using those numbers just got lucky those numbers were drawn. It's not a guarantee that you'll win just because you play the special numbers.

Still no love ♥️ lost my friend we are in this together   😁

Atleast I matched one number (five) for a zero dollar win, lol.

We try again on Wednesday, but I have my MM ticket in the drawer 😁

I won $16 with Powerplay using some other numbers I like. I might play birthday numbers too this time but one difference is since I'm over 50, I'll play my birth year as well because that will be in the higher numbers of the matrix which don't get played much.

When I play my own numbers. I usually pick 5 and let the machine pick the Powerball. Do you do the same or do you pick your own Powerball?

Just curious.

Right now for that to happen, pot would have to go to $3.5-$4.0 bil.

Please someone help me understand - how would someone spend through the current PB jackpot and be broke after 7 years.

In a state that does not tax the lottery - the take home amount is $325,621,045.

If you invest this amount in the 12 month Treasury Bill at a 5% interest per annum (current rate is 5.34%) you'll make $16,281,052.25 before taxes.

Take out maximum tax at 37% and you are left with $10,257,062 annually.

Now that's a whooping $854,755 that you can spend every month with out touching the original payout.

I really just can't comprehend how a logical human being burns through such amounts. I have no words to describe them.

I need to win it to see how they do it 🤣🤣🤣

Has there ever been an increase  like this before?

It went from $875,000,000 to $900,000,000 (a very snall increase) and from there to $one billion.

Kind of odd, no?

I can't believe some of the comments on this forum site I am reading.  Some people ought to be a shame for what their writing.

I have been on here since 2014 and some of the ideas are ridiculous.  Yet it  proves how some people are.  it tells me some people have bad planning in their lifestyle.

I will hire people to do reselling and shipping with me.  Investment in the stock market as I know some companies.  Some members need to hush  and not say anything at all.   TMI.   Honestly.  First thing I would do is situate my mom with expenses in the house,   Get a nice house and put things in that house.     Have ideas where to move too.

im not perfect and make mistakes but be ready whomever hits better lawyer up,  financial planning and a decent accountant.   Then go from there.

"It went from $875,000,000 to $900,000,000"

The real increase was from an actual annuity of 830 to an advertised annuity of 900, which is 7/8 of the 750 to 830 increase from Wednesday to Saturday. The final tally for Monday was actually 922, which is fairly impressive considering that sales for a Monday drawing have only been bigger than sales for the previous Saturday once.

"The jackpot should be around $1.6 - $1.9 "

There is no should. The jackpot is determined by how many tickets are bought, and if enough are bought to meet the estimate for tomorrow night there will be enough cash to buy an annuity for $1 billion.

With such a huge amount one does not need to venture into complicated investments.

One does not need to double or triple the money with high risk moves that could sweep you clean in a flash.

on percentage wise, black folk has won lottery jackpots than other ethnic groups, next is hispanic.

it means if you don't play, then you don't win. Lottery is a number game. it's color blind.

ticket sale in the previous draw actually went down in comparison to the draw before that. it was $142M only.

last year sale when the jackpot was `$1B. the tick sale was $264M, then it went on to $2B, someone in CA won it.

Winning a large sum of money like that changes a life forever. In order to succeed, a winner might be forced to sever ties with certain aspects of their life and certain people. That's probably the hardest thing to do after winning.

There's no way a person's life can stay the same after such a windfall.

Been living outside the US since 2011 and with jackpots soaring, I've availed the services of TheLotter since 2021. Though I haven't won big (yet), sure hope things will change in the upcoming draw.

The only downside of using this "butler service" is that a 3-combination set (the least you can buy in the website) will set you back $15 (up from $6)! I understand the convenience that it brings (being stationed abroad and all), but still...that's more than double! 😬

Guess it'll all be worth it once we hit the big one.

Also learned that they purchase their PB and MM in the state of Oregon (where an Iraqi citizen won the Megabucks back in 2015), to which as per the latest jackpot analysis, has a net payout of "just" $274,457,845.00. 🙃

This is totally true - the winner has to "sever ties with certain aspects of their life and certain people" and I would add that they should not pick up new habits that would be detrimental to their continued success.

Sometimes I feel like winning is the "easy" part. The hard work comes in after the fact.

Instead of buying 2 or 3 quick picks with the power play, I'm going to close my eyes and throw darts at my dart board.

Why would I do that? Because quick picks aren't winning for me.

curious bit of research thar, winterhug

Yes I know it is a curious bit of research. I just wanted to let the non believers know that birthday numbers are jackpot winners just like any other numbers. At least the experts are always saying don't play birthday numbers because one would be leaving out numbers over 31 and the jackpot would most likely be shared with others with the same numbers. No matter what number one plays it has a chance of being a winner.

A lot of us remember the tv show "Lost" which aired  from 2004 -2010. The character Hurley's lottery numbers were:  4-8-15-16-23-43 . Four of those six numbers were drawn in the Mega Millions on Jan. 11, 2011 and the 25K people who played that number each got $150.

In Dec. 2020 a South African lottery drew the numbers: 5-6-7-8-9-10 and 20 people shared the jackpot. Many people cried fraud and an investigation was launched but no fraud was found. Studies show that 10K people a day play the numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6. So all numbers have a chance of becoming the jackpot winning numbers

Super-man's avatarSuper-man

Reminds me of the 9-18-27-36-45-54 (divisible by 9) jackpot winners in the Philippines... all 433 of them shared the equivalent of $4 million!

Philippines $4M lotto jackpot with 433 winners sparks calls for investigation (nypost.com)
