Ohio Super Lotto 6/49 for 10/13/2001

Why not choose the annuity?
The real question with taking the annuity is if it's possible to take a portion of the after tax cash, invest it, and and get the same amount in 30 years. I'm pretty sure most financial adviser will suggest taking the cash if for nothing other than a business reason. It's seems that when discussing cash vs annuity , the fact the annuity will be taxed and possibly at the same tax rate but over 30 years, is usually ignored. And after 30 years a $60 million annuity jackpot might be really $36 milli

Why not choose the annuity?
CT, thanks... I forgot about that basic premise- the advertised vs actual amount. I suppose if you're financially savvy and/or have a trusted circle of advisers, then the cash option is the way to go most of the time. Key word trusted ... savvy For me, the notion of having a new pile of cash option money like that in my hands and fending off the hordes is kind of scary... can't claim anonymously round here. At least with the annuity (in higher JP's- MM/PB), if you make a mistake one ye

Do you still feel the same about Cash Option or Annuity??
I'm asking in the current economic enviroment is your opinion of Cash Vs. Annuity still the same? I ask this because of the fluctuating stock market and states like California asking for Bailouts. My thoughts are I wouldn't trust the state to control my money and dole it out to me. As a voluntary tax I doubt many tax payers would agree to send Millions of Dollars to a state lottery agency for their debt obligations. So While you probably would get your money eventually if worse came to

Book: Money For Nothing
For all the discsussions we've had about cash option vs annuities, this is interesting: From the editorial review: At age twenty-six, Ed found himself broke, knee-deep in gambling debt, and moving back into his parents' basement. It all changed, however, when he serendipitously landed a job as a salesman for The Firm--a company that offered up-front cash to lottery winners in exchange for their prize money, often paid in agonizingly small annual payments, some lasting up to twenty-five y

To my fellow LP members
Maybe Todd is less symphathetic towards me now as he used to be simply because (as a New Jersey resident who probably does not visit NY state often) he does not see firsthand as I do how crooked the NY Lottery is for a state that does not use computerized drawings save for Quick Draw. New Jersey Pick-6 Lotto is a very good game. It has the usual 50% payout vs NY Lotto's ridiculously low 38%-40%. When Todd plays Pick-6, he does not have to choose cash or annuity UNLESS he wins. Mega Millions i

Annuity Option
Something I have thought about recently is how you don't see many jackpots being paid out in annuities. Now granted lotteries still offer them, but almost every lottery winner (Thanks to MA, it isn't 100%) has taken the cash option. I can understand both sides here (Instant gratification vs. Financial security, Waiting for the next payment vs. Going broke quickly), but I think that the annuitized jackpot may become a thing of the past soon. As much as I would like the idea of getting an annual i

Story: Once upon a time an LP member
The monkey remembered and asked her about Tarzan. She said, We think he hit a jackpot, he's disappeared, stopped posting, and is believed to be somewhere in some kind of lotto winners protection program. The last thing anyone here ever remembers him talking about was cash vs annuity, remaining anonymous, and quick picks.

Random Generation of Quickpicks
This question -- about where the Quick Pick numbers are generated -- comes up almost as often as the cash vs. annuity debate. Is anyone prepared to say that the quick picks are chosen from the store terminals for ALL State lotteries? Do all lotteries release information about how many quick picks win from each terminal? Naturally, I am more interested in knowing what Michigan does but am interested in all the States as well.
