Nice win oldghost. The big wins on the Monopoly game are hard to come by. @skeptic - I think Jim's CPA is basically advising Jim to not deduct his losses. Basically, I think his advice is going to result in Jim paying more taxes than he would otherwise owe. You should keep the tickets and a log if you want to get a good result in an audit.

Go ahead and plug in the numbers on the sample H R Block return to see what it looks like for your financial situation. The numbers are going to differ from person to person. For example, if someone won $10k and had $2.5k withheld and had $10k in gambling losses they could potentially receive that $2.5k that was federally withheld back. With how many deductions a person might have, their income and other taxes owed, it is tough to say what they may get back or owe ultimately.

Outstanding, Lucid!!! That's the ticket. When you decide to go to the district office of your choice, you will be given a check for the whole 1000.00...unless you owe the state for back child support or something. When it's time to do taxes in 2017, then you claim your winning ticket(s). Big congrats!

Ah, that sucks. Roughly 1 in 6 books should have a $500 winner, so I'd guess that's likely a typical return for a book. Maybe a tad bit better if there's a $100 winner. The 10X with $2, and doublers for $10 are disgusting. At least you get to use these losers toward writing off taxes, however. =)

Win for life tickets
Someone in Brooklyn just won the 10K a Week For Life jackpot and opted for the one time lump some. From a guaranteed 10 million he opted for the lump sum and after taxes is taking home 5.3 million. As a side note this is the third 10K a Week jackpot sold in Brooklyn in the past 5 or so years, two were sold at stores near me, one of which I went to every week but never purchased games from them. This one, thank goodness was no where near me although I have past the store occasionally when I'm

Just curious though you gave your Dad and Stepmom? (I'm assuming since your mom wants 100k she isn't receiving part of the 250k you gave your Dad and his spouse) 250k ticket which is 125k each before taxes. I would think you would give your mom equal value. I can see paying off your bro car which is cool but giving more to your mom. I don't know how your relationship is with either but do what you feel is sufficient in your mind and hopefully they will appreciate and respect that. If I ever win

As I understand it, while you can give/leave-upon-death up to $5,000,000 in a lifetime before being hit with the gift tax, you can actually only give $14k a year (this is the current 2016 annual exclusion) to any individual other than your spouse (no taxation between spouses) before you get hit with additional taxes (outside of gifts directly for medical or educational expenses). So, one way to step aside from this is, Look, folks, I'm not giving any more money to the IRS because you want to get
